Noticed it the other day thought it was a bit odd. Presumably it's to deter theiving if it's plain your being filmed.

People are finding it creepy though.

These are fairly commonplace over here, my local Co-Op has them, as does the WH Smith on the High Street. I assume it just acts as a deterrent to the 'borderline' people who might 'forget' an item or two! We're recorded everywhere we go, part and parcel of life these days, wouldn't worry me unduly.

Apart from the fact you can see yourself on the screen what's different to the cameras already filming you in the stores anyway. It might stop the chancers.

Don't expect anything from life, just be grateful to be alive.

The cameras have generally been there for ages, the display making it clear to the punter is the only new bit. More often than not showing a blank Windows 10 desktop in my local shop!

Yeah same cameras are in my local SuperValu. Not a new thing really.

    #MEGA MAKE EUROPE GREAT AGAIN

noticed it for the first time the other day when in Dunnes- a good thing in my view - it will certainly stop the middle class mid life crisis thieves stealing blocs of Stilton this Christmas 😀

Yea really weird seen them in aldi lately. also the camera on the booze shelf in Tesco. Everything has gone really Orwellian since covid

Deterrent effect no doubt, like security tags on steaks. You're being filmed anyway in every store.

Some of the camera angles are rather unflattering. Wouldn't want to be sensitive about your bald spot.

I think there's a difference between a cctv camera up in the corner, filming a wide space in low definition from a height, to a head level camera filming in high definition right in your face. I know it's meant to be a deterrent to shoplifters. And I know this sounds like tin-foil hat stuff, but what if I did want to have a day where my image isn't uploaded to some cloud and everything I do tracked and traced?

"There's LastApache now, crossing the road outside her house. Except we can't say for sure if it's her or not, because we didn't get a great angle, and she has a hat and scarf up around her face. We think she entered the supermarket five minutes later - it's the same coat and scarf, but again it wasn't a great angle. Oh but don't worry, here she is five minutes later at the till in Dunnes. It's definitely her, she has removed the scarf and the camera is right in her face. This places her in the area at the time of the incident".

Or whatever. It just feels uncomfortable. I'm not saying I'm about to partake in any "incidents" and I know it sounds like the plot of a Netflix forgettable tv show. But still. I don't like it.

That said, I'm probably more concerned about all the other things used to track and trace me. If I bought wine every week in my weekly shop, that gets uploaded to the Cloud when I use my loyalty card. And that means my health insurance quote goes up because they access that information through those firms that create a profile of you based on your online information. That probably concerns me more than the authorities trying to trace my movements.

These are in my local SuperValu. I don't see the issue.

I do think it's unusual to annoy the staff and contact a radio station about it tough.

I don't mind them. It's nice, when doing mundane tasks, to be given a reminder of how sexy I am.

Mad that so many people are defending these Orwellian measures. Since covid people just lap it up

Not sure what Covid has to do with it, but I've no issue with cameras in any public space. It's an extra bit of security and doing me no harm.

Also in the latest Lidl stores.

Obviously aimed at deterring those that forget to scan a few items!

Its a good sign the poster is just spouting nonsense when that happens.

No camera can stop El Loco Bandito

That is the time when things started getting really Orwellian. They certainly didn't waste a good crisis

Rubbish! We had CCTV cameras all around town, in every supermarket and even in smaller shops pre covid.

But covid was invented by Bill Gates so he could sell more AI software for surveillance purposes. Do try and keep up.
