UK introduces DPF PN testing

From Jan 2026 all cars in the UK that originally came fitted with a dpf will be subject to a Particulate Number test (PN) during their MOT.

This will mean that any car where the dpf is not working correctly, is mapped out or otherwise tampered with is an instant fail until the dpf is fixed/reinstated fully

Word is we are going to be following closely and there are a lot of cars on Irish roads that have had them removed

It would be far better if it screened out diesel as a fuel for small passenger cars and short journeys.

Which, to be fair, is already beginning.

By proxy it is, as most DPF's were removed due to insufficient journeys at high enough engine/DPF temps to burn off the residue.

While short journeys do cause more problems. Cars which do long journeys also have problems. The reality is the emission tech is complex and troublesome. Some designs are more reliable than others. So one might do massive miles with no problem someone else nothing but trouble.

Euro6 diesels are generally pretty bad, Euro7 may well sound the death knell for the diesel engine.

I wonder will it only be for newer cars euro 6+, mines a euro 4 so its dirty even with the dpf

Euro 4 should remove 99.5% of all particles so if its smokey or sooty there is an issue

If Government made it so that petrol was 1.30 a litre. and that price was guaranteed for 5 years, regardless of market, the transition from diesel would be complete

New regulations are never backdated to older vehicles, the emission standard of the time is what is applied

I challenge you to come up with one instance where new regulations were backdated

EU standards are minimum not maximum standards, Belgium, Germany and Netherlands (I think) have already implemented PN-PTI and it’s in the EU agenda.

But it’s a new testing standard, not a new standard for the vehicle. The DOF is mandatorily there just as seatbelts were mandatory before a testing standard was introduced. It would be a post-sale verification of the standard and would not be unlawful or unprecedented.

Because newer cars have warranties and are a lot more valuable. So they are hardly going to be exporting 5 year old cars when they are actually worth repairing? We don't import ICE vehicles from the UK in any meaningful amount anymore and that's not going to change any time soon

That all depends on the economics of how much to repair versus how much to import.

Well it's not just about the 'environment' in general, diesel particulates are a risk to health also.

So I hope the authorities here are taking notice and adopt similar.
