Win11 compatibility

Hi all

I put together a PC a few years ago with help from this page thanks again I ran the check and it tells me its not Win11 compatabile

Can anyone tell me the simplest way to upgrade my current pc to make it win11 compatabile

It says Processor Xeon not supported also TPM not enabled

It can't be done naturally. There's no CPU that fits socket 1150 that supports Win11. If you really must, there's some patches to disable certain checks and force it to install. But that introduces other issues, such being precluded from future builds if it needs specific CPU instructions and other pitfalls. Given the age of it, you may want to consider replacing it.

These days the default tends to be something Ryzen based, but there's plenty of second hand or refurbished stuff that will run Win11. Got a budget in mind?

No budget constraints just like to upgrade to something that will last a good few years and hopefully can reuse graphics card and memory etc

You can re-use most parts, but not the RAM, DDR3 is long past. It's DDR5 now, with DDR4 for older but more budget friendly platforms.

To postpone the electronic waste a little longer, windows 11 will install without issue on your current build - just have a look around the web as described by Spear above. Alternatively, haven't Microsoft given a stay of execution on W10?

I'm posting this on W11 from a laptop released in 2011.

You can enroll in ESU in one of the following three ways:

• At no additional cost if you are syncing your PC Settings.
• Redeem 1,000 Microsoft Rewards points.
• One-time purchase of $30 USD or local currency equivalent plus applicable tax.

First option in that list is fairly painless.

Another year will make a lot of Windows 11 compatible hardware that much cheaper. Unless another pandemic happens…..

The motherboard has to have TPM (Trusted Platform Module) to be compatible. As it happens I'm installing Windows 11 today.

What's your motherboard? On some, they have TPM but its disabled. You may be able to enable it in the BIOS. If not the motherboard doesnt have TPM.

I encountered this issue with my old computer when I couldn't upgrade to Windows 11.

He has H87-G41 PC Mate(MS-7850). I just did a search for it on:

https://www.msi.com/Motherboard/H87-G41-PC-Mate/Specification

and it says it has a TPM header, so its maybe disabled in the BIOS which is why its failing the Win11 test.

@xl500 Go into your BIOS and see if you can find any mention of TPM. If its disabled, change it to enabled and then do the compatibility test again.

I think "header" means exactly that - connector to install TPM as an additional module that is sold separately.

If the patches keep the hardware going until then why not.

That said you can pick up a much newer PC on adverts for very little..

I was looking into this too for an elderly family member that has an older but fully working Windows 10 machine.

You can use a tool called Rufus to create a bootable Windows 11 USB stick using an ISO from the Microsoft site. This will bypass some of the checks and allow you install Windows 11 on an older machine. You check/uncheck the desired options when creating the bootable USB.

Also when installing the new Windows 11 OS to add a local user and not have to create a Microsoft account you can follow these steps:

1. Choose region/keyboard
2. Skip Wi-Fi
3. Open admin Command Prompt with Shift + F10 (Hold the shift button and press F10 - You might also need to use the function button depending on keyboard)
4. Type start ms-cxh:localonly to open the Local account option
5. Set your username/password and decline telemetry/ads prompts
6. Confirm it’s a local administrator

Yep, that's what @Spear is talking about. But as he also alluded to, you can do this but you will be precluded from moving to a new servicing channel automatically and well as introducing a whole other set of problems. You can do in place upgrades which are not without their risk as you are doing them on unsupported hardware now. Also there is nothing stopping MS from introducing something that will break your OS install permanently, without any warning.

I'm not saying that it's not possible but it's not entirely an ideal solution either.

Best thing in my mind is do nothing until the end of next year unless you are particularly itching to upgrade for some reason.
