Saw a car did this yesterday.

On the one hand, there is nocontinuing white line.

On the other hand, on the ground it's saying "go straight".

Nothing to say you can't do a U-turn there. The arrow is irrelevant to the point. There is no sign and no solid white lines etc. And why would you care enough to create an account here just to ask that?

    Thanks for your opinion!

And why would you care enough to create an account here just to ask that?T

    That's a big assumption.

The account was created months ago. This is my very first post.

I’m genuinely curious what others think about it.

Actually your account is over a year old (April 11th 2024) Personally I wouldn't do a U-Turn there but that doesn't mean it's illegal.

'No U turn' signs exist for a specific reason, the lack of one at this junction should answer your question.

Looking at that particular junction, your arrow drawn on the photo is entering the bus lane on the opposite side, so you should go far enough into the junction to allow you to complete the turn without entering the bus lane.

The below is a general 'signature' and not part of any post:

FYI, if you move to a 'smart' meter electricity plan, you CAN'T move back to a non-smart plan.

You don't have to take a 'smart' meter if you don't want one, opt-out is available.

Buy drinks in 3L or bigger plastic bottles or glass bottles or cartons to avoid the DRS fee.

Public transport user? If you're sick of phantom ghost services on the 'official' RTI sources, check bustimes.org for actual 'real' RTI, if it's on their map it actually exists.

I think the fact the green traffic light has no arrow pointing ahead means you can legally do a U-Turn if it's safe to do so but can't be 100% on that. If the green light had an arrow pointing straight ahead I don't think you could do a U-Turn but again stand ready to be corrected!

The arrows on the road show "Left Turn" or "Straight Ahead". I would say no Uturn.. Traffic behind might confirm this 😀

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 470 ✭✭Orban6

Fairly certain that it is legal.

Rules of the road (which we have all read 😉) only mentions you can't if there is a sign or road making prohibiting it, e.g. continuous centre white line.

he also mounted the footpath and ploughed through one set of traffic lights

You may make a u-turn only if it is completely safe to do so (unless there's a no u-turn sign)

So if there were vehicles behind you or if vehicle had to abruptly slow or make other unwarranted maneuver due to your actions, then you could be charged with driving without due care and attention.

EG - If you use common sense and don't impede any other motorist, then that's fine. But if you think its your right to do so and to hell with causing other motorists to stop or make sudden changes - then its a valid stop

How would a vehicle behind you be dangerously impeded by performing a U turn? If a turn is legal, surely it’s up to other drivers to anticipate that and drive accordingly? I’d agree if you were concerned about performing a U turn into oncoming traffic.

According to here - you go straight

    S.I. No. 294/1964 - Road Traffic General Bye-Laws, 1964.

Like the left lane you must turn left, why would the right lane mean you can do a u-turn?

Did you get a ticket for the u-turn OP?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2, Paid Member Posts: 9,418 ✭✭✭markpb

The existence of a No U-turn sign would seem to suggest that U turns are generally legal unless the sign says otherwise.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 5,035 ✭✭✭jacool

It would be interesting to know if the traffic coming in the other direction get a green light at the same time.

If they do, and you are sitting at the top of a line of cars that want to go straight ahead, and therefore, have to remain in this lane, and you are making them wait, until perhaps the lights have gone red, to turn, and none of them can get through, I'd be re-thinking my options.

It is quite a sharp looking u-turn spot though (based on photo alone I mean) - is it legal to do a u-turn if you need to also 3-point turn to make it?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2, Paid Member Posts: 9,418 ✭✭✭markpb

Out of courtesy, yes! It doesn’t make the manoeuvre illegal though.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,465 ✭✭✭EchoIndia

    And the relevant text is:

"(2) White arrows placed in traffic lanes at an approach to a road junction shall indicate to drivers the direction to be taken by traffic using those lanes, as follows :—

    (a) in the case of arrows pointing straight ahead, a driver using the traffic lane in which those arrows are placed shall proceed straight through the junction ;"

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,417 ✭✭✭extra-ordinary_

Yeh, would think if there was a right turn at the junction then a u-turn might also be permissable, but a u-turn in moving traffic going in a straight direction (whether there was traffic on the other side or not) would be a bit of a crazy manoeuvre imo. OP, just ask yourself if you'd do it with a Garda car behind you…😎

From my experience of cops, they are as useless at traffic rules as the rest of us!

I know that spot, its in Adamstown, Lucan and see the U turns happening a lot because houses on one side of the road only have access to 1 direction coming out of their roads isn't that correct?

Don't think its illegal but I wouldn't be surprised to see it being made so in the future as its not really suitable and its very frequent.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 6,205 ✭✭✭masterboy123

No, making a U-turn at that location (as shown by the red line) would not be legal or safe.

    Here’s why:

    1. Lane markings:

The lane you’re in has a straight-ahead arrow painted on the road. That means traffic in that lane is only permitted to go straight, not to turn or U-turn.

    2. Traffic light & junction design:

The junction and signal setup are intended for forward or left-turn traffic only. A U-turn there would cut across multiple lanes, creating a high risk of collision with oncoming vehicles or traffic from the opposite side.

    3. No designated U-turn bay:

There’s no sign or lane indicating that a U-turn is allowed. In Ireland, U-turns are only permitted where it’s clearly safe and not prohibited by signage, road markings, or traffic conditions.

    4. Legal aspect (Road Traffic (Traffic and Parking) Regulations):

It’s an offence to perform a U-turn that interferes with other traffic or contradicts traffic signs/markings.

    Conclusion:

You cannot legally make a U-turn there. You’d need to continue straight and use a roundabout or another safe, designated location to turn back.

There must be a small slip for u turns on the junctions where this is allowed. But sure that is extra width and tarmac etc. Doing a u turn from the right lane where there is no right turn is going to annoy everyone behind. I can count the number of times I had to U-turn on the junctions in this country. Different story is driving in the US it’s so much easier there.

    Not Your Ornery Onager

A u-turn is, by its nature, a potentially dangerous manoeuvre for other road users.

I would not even consider performing a u-turn at the junction above.

    this is the rule

    "

    Explantion:

If you want to do a U-turn you must first choose a place where it is safe and legal to do it. Check all around for other road users and do not impede their right of way. Complete the manoeuvre efficiently and safely."

If there is no sign saying NO U TURN then ….

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 10,634 ✭✭✭✭User1998

If there were no oncoming cars and no cars right behind me I would do a u turn
