Eir 5 Gbps + Eero Pro Max 7 (VLAN 10 + PPPoE setup issues and speed drops)

    Hey folks,

Looking for some advice from anyone running Eir 5 Gbps FTTH with their own router setup — particularly those using an Eero Pro Max 7 or similar Wi-Fi 7 mesh system. Eero as powerful as it is, is limited with what you can configure it seems.

    Current setup

    • Provider: Eir 5 Gbps FTTH
    • ONT: Huawei model (installed by Eir technician)
    • Router: Eero Pro Max 7 (single unit acting as main router)
    • The supplied Eir modem/router was removed — it was huge and I prefer a smaller, cleaner setup.
    • Eero is connected directly to the ONT.

    Configuration

    • On Eir fibre, as far as it seems VLAN 10 and PPPoE are required for authentication.
    • In the Eero app, when I set VLAN ID 10, the system automatically forces PPPoE mode — and I can’t choose DHCP while VLAN tagging is enabled. I didn’t have to fill in anything for Ppoe, it seems to auto set the username for me
    • I’ve confirmed this with tests: if I try to set it to DHCP, it doesn’t actually change to it.

    Performance

    • Initially, when plugged into after a full restart, I get the full 5 Gbps down / 250 mbps up for about 10–15 minutes.
    • After that, download speed drops and stabilises around 4.3 Gbps, but upload remains consistent.
    • My suspicion is that PPPoE overhead or CPU throttling on the Eero is causing the drop once it settles under load perhaps?

    What I’ve learned so far

    • Eero currently can’t do VLAN 10 + DHCP at the same time — only VLAN + PPPoE it seems?
    • It looks like the Eero’s PPPoE handling isn’t fully hardware-offloaded, so performance degrades a bit over time maybe?

What I’d like to know what I’m doing wrong???? or at least

    1. Has anyone successfully run Eir 5 Gbps FTTH + Eero Pro Max 7 and achieved full speed long-term?
    2. Any small devices you recommend that can handle VLAN 10 + PPPoE at 5 Gbps without becoming the bottleneck?
    3. Is there any way to get DHCP over VLAN 10 directly from the Huawei ONT (i.e. skip PPPoE entirely) on residential Eir lines?

Appreciate any real-world experience, tips, or config examples. Would love to keep the Eero as the main router but with full 5 Gbps and stable speeds.

    Cheers
