    Hello,

We recently received the family €80 per month drug payment scheme card.

My wife is going to be on medication for the rest of her life. One injected medicine costs €160 for a month, and she paid €80 at the counter because she has the card. Is that €80 for the entire month and other medicines she buys will be free?

    Thanks

Yes it's €80 for all prescribed medication for the month, and not just for herself but can be used for the household not just the individual.

Now it won't cover no prescription medication.

Yes the 80 covers everything for the month. Be careful because it's a calender month. I got a bad ear infection a few years ago and got precribed antibiotics on the 29th of June. I had to get another prescription a few days later on the 2nd of July and I had to pay full price for both.

Make sure all family members are on the same account or whatever the HSE/pharmacies call it. My wife had some difficultes getting prescriptions fot one of our kids because they were not "linked". Took a few phone calls over several weeks to get sorted.

Make sure you use the same pharmacy for all the family's meds. If you use a second pharmacy during the same month, you'll have to pay up to 80 euro again (it can be claimed back from the HSE, but takes a while)

    Thanks all!

She also didn’t realise she had to present the card each time. She was charged already this month. Still figuring it out.

In fairness, €80 per month is very good value.

I go to the same pharmacy and they have recorded the card details, so the order just came out at €80 without producing the card again.

Check the list here to see if her illness is covered on the long term scheme. If it is, the full cost of her drugs may be covered.
