HSE MRI Scan

The HSE are more and more dysfunctional the more I need to use them.

My GP became concerned about possible Prostate Cancer, I was refered to St. James Rapid Access Clinic, and in fairness to them I had a tele-consultation fairly quickly. They refered me to get a MRI scan, and was told the waiting list was approx 6 months. At 6 months I phoned them, as I hadn't heard anything again, they then told me 10 months. I phoned the Digital Imaging Dept last week and was told it would be at least 12 months (and their machine was broken, so they had to reschedule a whole lot of people already).

I am on a state pension and cannot really afford it, but opted for a private scan, at €300. I cannot live with this hanging over my head for another year.

The HSE really needs to sort themselves out!

I was waiting on one and rang them up and they said it would be 2027. So I said I'd pay myself (which is the goal I guess) and she said they could fit me in that evening! (This was a few weeks ago) I couldn't make that I told her and she said what about tomorrow. She had early/evening slots free. Them machines are sitting idle.

And they rang me on the day to ask if I could come in earlier as their was no one booked in before me. I was last and they wanted to go home.

    It's not going to improve.

I had one about 4 years ago for a different issue. There was some fûck up in the Mater where my name wasn’t added to their own waiting list for the scan but had been noted in the notes from the consultation that I was to have one. When I pointed this out for them at the following years consultation they were apologetic and few days after I received an appointment in Charter Medical in Smithfield…it’s a state of the art real nice private facility with a dedicated diagnostic imaging facility there. Might be worth pushing for a referral to there. The HSE are clients of theirs.

    Hi

I’m sorry You feel aggrieved but can I share my experience with You. I walked into my GP on June 10 last year. He sent me to the urology department up in Tallaght. It’s been a long road for me. I was diagnosed with Prostate Cancer ( PC ). You have to go through many scans, blood tests etc. I know I did & right now am up in James’s for my 2nd dose of radiation. I sometimes wondered was I being neglected but in truth I always felt I was in safe hands. I cannot praise the Oncology Doctors & nurses in both James’s & TUH enough.

I hope You get diagnosed one way or the other soon but I’m writing this to try assure You not to lose the faith.

Im no PC expert but feel free to PM me if You need any questions answered.

    Best of luck👍

I had a private prostate MRI in James' with insurance. This was in the evening, it seemed that the private operation were taking over the machines at 5pm and doing people non stop until 8pm. This presumably arises because the HSE are not providing two shifts to make maximum use of their own machinery. If they had two teams then they could do 8am to 8pm 4 days a week and do some on Saturday as well and clear the waiting list. By and large the HSE has the capacity to do the job but they have these bottlenecks which never seem to get resolved.

Not disagreeing with You CB, but I’ve just got my schedule times for my radiation for next week ( I’m doing it on the State ) & 4 of the 5 times are after 17h00. They also told me they do the treatment up to 20h00. Brilliant staff btw.

Radiation is not MRI, perhaps the HSE has more staff in that section, it suggests that they are trying, which is welcome. That said, perhaps they simply put me on the private because I had the insurance, there is a bit of that going on.
