If we buy cull cows for slaughter do we need to test them within 30 days, we have a non breeding herd

I think if they are more than 6 months since the last test on the herd of origin, you have to test

If there more than 6 months since there previous test when bought then yes you'll be required to test them or you're herd will be restricted after 60 days to the best of my knowledge. The only way around this that I'm aware of is if you're a feedlot herd at which stage you can only move cattle direct to slaughter regardless.

    Key testing rules

    • Pre-movement requirements: To move, cows of all ages and bulls over 36 months must have been tested within the last six months, and they must come from a herd that has also been tested within the last six months.
    • If requirements are not met: If the animal or its source herd is outside the 6-month test window, the animal must be tested either:
      • Within 30 days before moving, OR
      • Within 30 days after moving into a new herd.
    • Post-movement restrictions: If a post-movement test is required, the animal is immediately restricted to the new herd until it is tested.
    • Consequences of not testing: If the animal is not tested within 30 days of arriving at the new herd, the entire new herd will be restricted.
    • Further restrictions: If the animal still has not been tested after a further 60 days (90 days from the original movement), the entire new herd will be scheduled for a full TB test.

Let's say I have a bunch of 5 month old weanlings and I want to bring them to mart, do they also have to be tested within last 6 months.

Yes they need to be tested as over 6 weeks. It would only need be in the last year but if they are only 5 months they would need to be tested in that time.

If you don't test the dvo will restrict you from selling anything through mart until that animal leaves the herd.

You can still buy away and kill in factory

the same rules don’t apply for calves. They would simply have to be tested within the year and there are no further restrictions on the purchase farmer either.

It’s only cows and then all bulls over 36 months that the 6 month rule applies.

These are 5 month weanlings going to the mart not calves purchased and being held on farm until the next herd test.

As they are under 6 months if they have not been tested in the last 6 months they've never been tested.

any calf over 42 days must be tested before sale in mart. But say he was tested and then sold at 8 months old, there is no requirement for either

    a) test to be within 6 months

    b) purchasing farmer to test within 30 days
