    Hello

I believe there are a number of changes when young hurlers move from under 12 to under 13. I think its something like this

    • 15 a side
    • Players are allowed to solo
    • Full length pitch
    • Full size goals

    Any others?

How many sub changes are allowed?
    How many minutes a half?
Where are the 65s taken from?

Short answer is it all depends on county bye-laws. And remember, some might not even play at U13. Here in Wexford, for instance, we operate at "even" age groups, so we have U12 and U14 competitions, but not U13.

First thing here is that in U12, there's no rule against soloing in hurling. That's more of a recommendation for Go Games, but things cease to be Go Games after U11 (or in our case, after U10, since we don't operate at U11).

U12s here play 13-a-side and 25 minutes each way on a pitch with smaller goals (supposed to be 15' x 7') on the 20m lines of a regular pitch. They play full width of the pitch. So-called 65s are taken from the 65m line all right, but because the goal is on the 20m line, the shot is actually just 45m from goal.

FWIW, in football, a '45' is still taken from the 45m line, but is really just 25m from goal.

Some clubs have a separate underage pitch marked out, that's 40m shorter than a full pitch, but still same width. This pitch needs just 25m and 45m lines at both ends. There's no "square ball" rule and no penalties, so the usual paralellograms aren't needed. This is because it's not feasible for clubs who don't have a separate underage pitch to mark those things out on the 20m lines of their regular pitch.

When players move up to U14, it becomes full-size everything - i.e. 15-a-side, full pitch, full-sized goals, and 65s genuinely are 65s. Only real difference from adult hurling is how they play 25 minutes per half, not 30.

But again, it depends on county bye-laws. The Rule Book allows counties to operate a reduced pitch at all ages up to and including U15. So if a county chooses to do so, a '65' for example still might not actually be 65m from goal.

The one sure thing is that the usual rule of five subs applies in championship matches. Counties can allow extra in league or non-competitive matches all right, but it's confined to five for championship.

Varies from county to county. In Clare, it's full pitch and full rules at u13 level. Might be unlimited subs not I'm not 100% sure on that.

Thanks for the replies, so not one size fits all answer, depends on the county rules, but in general there are some big enough changes from under 12 to under 13

That's an accurate synopsis all right. It varies from county to county.

    And just to further illustrate:

While we currently operate at 'even' ages in Wexford (U12, U14, etc.), we did run things at 'odd' ages such as U11, U13, U15, etc. for a few years (2018 to 2022).

And during those years, U13s played according to the rules that U12s played with both before and since that time - i.e. smaller pitch, smaller goals, a '65' really being a 45, and so on. It was only when they went up to U15 that it became a full-size pitch and full-size goals.

This is obviously a different approach to what @Stationmaster says above about what currently applies at U13 level in Clare.
