Terribly sad news that Martin Mansergh has passed away aged 78. Regardless of your politics, its very hard to ignore the impact he had in a long, distinguished career.

Probably not, his notes used to be all over the place in a pile on his desk. Haughey used be flummoxed by it.

Mansergh was the definition of a nutty professor, irascible when people couldn't keep up with his way of doing and explaining things.

But a highly intelligent and strategic thinker, who made an incalculable contribution to the peace process, both for the Irish side and for the deal as a whole.

What better epitaph than to have done the country a genuine service.

Martin was a kindly man, warm and personable with a good sense of humour.

Rest in Peace.

I seen mention on X from someone that spoke to him recently at the launch of Eoin O'Malley's new book Charlie vs Garret that he was in the process of writing his memoirs
