Ordering from PC Specialist, Overclockers or somewhere else

So, I've been giving some serious thought to upgrading my old machine which I've had for about 11 years now. The old girl is showing her age and the i7 4790K isn't on the list of Windows 11 compatibility and 10 is coming to end of support next month. I originally bought that PC from Overclockers.uk and the only things I've done to it was added more RAM (32gb) and changed the GPU (RTX 2060 6gb). It's run smoothly for many years, but I recently had to add a new i7 4790K CPU from Amazon.uk which, BTW, I was hit for at customs costing me an extra 51 euro. I was not happy about that.

I've been looking at getting a build from PC Specialist, which have an .ie address but they are completely based in the UK near Huddersfield. I am worried that if I do pull the trigger and buy a new machine from them that I will be hit for customs charges since the UK voted for Brexit, and I don't fancy paying 100's of Euro on top of what I'll be paying for the machine.

    So, a couple of questions…

    1. Have any of you on here ordered anything from either PC Specialist or Overclockers recently? And if so were you liable for customs charges once your parcel hit Ireland?
    2. Do any of you have any recommendations for either an Irish based company or one that's EU based where international import duty doesn't apply?

Import duty will never apply as it's 0% on PCs and components, so either you were ripped off or that €51 was VAT which must always be paid BUT from a reasonable seller set up to deal with Ireland you will pay the Irish VAT at purchase and that's it. Wild guess is you bought not from Amazon direct but from a third party who charged you UK VAT so then you were liable for Irish VAT on entry?

Basically make certain you being charged either Irish VAT of 23% or no VAT (which means you will pay VAT on entry) and then you should be fine.

I got a PC from PCSpecialist about 3 years ago and there was no extra charges. I beleve they charge Irish VAT And, as minitrue said above, there's 0% duty on PC components

Just to say…I've W11 installed on 3 devices - the oldest on an i5-3340M laptop and the newest on a Pentium G4560 desktop.

Aye, you could be correct. Seems the part came from a company called Componix. So I guess it was VAT and not duties. FedEx called it "Duties".

Anyhow, good news that I can order from PC Specialist cos I have a nice build on the cards there that I'm almost ready to pull the trigger on.

There is a way that I can install Win 11 on my current machine (i7 4790k CPU and Gigabyte Z97X Sli motherboard) by using BypassTPMCheck and BypassSecureBootCheck in the system registry. But Microsoft says that future builds might cause problems.

I have a new drive coming on Saturday, so I'll try a straight install and if that don't work then I'll try the reg hack.

Straight install will fail. It's fine doing the workaround as you'll still get updates and if you want to upgrade to the newest W11 version you can do an in-place upgrade. Just don't have anything vital running on it just in case MS pull the rug from under you. FYI, W10 extended support can be gotten until October 2026. You might already have met the requirement of doing a Windows backup. Might hang on until then to avoid putting any cost into that machine.
