Dreadful heavy rain on and off all day around Clondalkin and Liffey Valley. Soaked several times. Stopped for now, but ominous clouds still.

Heavy rain and hailstones started just as I arrived back in Celbridge around 4.30pm, and still lashing here, now, too. No more than a dry half-hour for me today. Total misery.

Casement reporting only 0.3mm since 9am. Totally at odds with nearby conditions yet again. I'm starting to think they've put a roof over the weather station there!

This first week of September has to be up there with the worst back to school weather we've had in a long time.

Not a bad day in Galway. Dry with some sunny spells. Definitely cooler this week.

2022 was pretty terrible. As you often quoted at the time, the 2nd September was the date of a significant change after our lovely summer weather and it marked the beginning of a prolonged wet period until summer 2024 with only a few exceptions (most notably second half of January and February 2023 as well as mid-May to mid-June 2023).

Today feels like deep autumn. Early September is generally a bit like Summer, bar the shortness of the days.

Today feels like around the 23rd of October. 13c an hour ago in Portlaoise.

Yeah it's pretty depressing stuff alright, while some people will rightly say that we had a good Summer, a bad September just makes our Autumn/Winter even harder, as we will be waiting at least six or seven months then before we start to see any increase in temperatures or feel some heat.

I was out walking this morning and the sun was out. I was surprised with the heat from it even though it was low. The heat is there if we can get a decent high pressure overhead. A big if at this point but we'll see. The warm August makes the cooler temperatures this week seem worse than usual for September.

Fair point in that August this year was an outlier (in my opinion 😊), and while we all have selective memories, my memories would be of August not been great, and then an excellent September. However it's very hard to see us getting any kind of an Indian Summer this September with all forecasts for the next 10 days not looking great.

that's why I take my holidays to Spain every September to get a break and to shorten the very long autumn by 1 to 2 weeks.

Gonzo, all you have to worry about is the turbulence on the way over and then you'll be relaxing on a sun lounger with a martini and a fat cigar. Spare a thought for the rest of us in the rain and gales until the turbulence on your way home.

    Enjoy the holidays 😎.

I remember making hay, light enough meadow, this date 22 years ago. It was a lovely 22c on 4 September 2003, clouded up in the afternoon.

yet again, lunch time walk scuppered due to heavy shower in Dublin City.

Today is alot more showery than I was expecting and feeling chilly as well. Can't wait to fly out of Dublin Airport on Saturday. Totally fed up of this Atlantic pattern already.

  • Site Banned Posts: 4,164 ✭✭✭Oíche Na Gaoithe Móire

9.5c on the Slievemargy hills, South Laois. Very chilly.

That's 17c down on the temperature here this time 2 years ago. That September heatwave. About 8c down on what we'd usually have at this time of year.

Wouldn’t it be fantastic if we got our Atlantic onslaught in the months of September, October and November and then high pressure takes over migrating north to Greenland/ Iceland resulting in a sustained severe cold spell for Ireland, the UK and much of Europe during all of December!!

Edit: what I said above would probably lead to bad flooding Sept - Nov so maybe not such a good wish!

Torrential rain and the longest rumble of thunder I've ever heard in Celbridge just now.

Intermittent heavy rain around Liffey Valley since midday also, but it was a nice morning.

While everyone wishes for 3 beautiful summer months, in reality that never happens in Ireland. Therefore I would happily sacrifice a few weeks of weather in mid summer if we could get it in September, even some of September. For all the reasons in the above post.

    Remember that .

Wet grey nondescript Autumn and Winter .

Hopefully that is not what is in store for us now .

Am already getting cabin fever as everytime I tried to go out today it lashed, torrential showers with blackclouds . Cold .

Lovely bright sunny spells in between , fooling you into thinking it was going to be ok .

While the change to Autumn has been pronounced, later September, early October could flip back to Indian Summer weather.

For the first 5 or 6 days of March 2013 we had nice Spring weather. It looked like a clean break from Winter to Spring. Around 9th March Ireland drew with France in the 6N in bitter sleety weather in the Aviva. By Monday 11th March some seriously cold -16 uppers were over Ireland. March ended up as one of the coldest on record.

So a very obvious change in season, at the end of one, doesn't mean it'll sustain. There are a lot of examples.

Seeing as I dont remember snow that year, I take it that it was the year that Ulster got buried in March with flocks of sheep and cows being lost and/or dug out of snowdrifts

  • Site Banned Posts: 4,164 ✭✭✭Oíche Na Gaoithe Móire

Parts of Ulster buried under snow around 22 March.

A fair few snow episodes on the hills. Also Waterford city got a fall on 11/12 March, unusual for them.

    Bitter wind chill that month.

Indeed but that was related to a separate event 11 days later whereas March 11th was a classic northeasterly but snow struggling to stick for many. I did see plenty of snow scenes where it did stick reasonably at least during the morning.

Did get lying snow from another easterly the morning of the 27th March though. Did Bray escape those streamers?

Minus 16 uppers and a North Easterly and snow not sticking for many/most. Sigh. Honestly Snow in Ireland is like the Swiss Cheese holes all lining up for Aircraft accidents to happen analogy. LOL

We had briefly lying snow up the road in Loughlinstown on March 27th that year, I've a video of the kids messing in it.

Not a bad couple of days here in Galway after a wet start to the week. Starting to adjust to the cooler temps. Weekend looks dodgy but I will chance a swim tomorrow. Love those September waves.
