New LED dimmer switch

Time to put childish things aside.

I added an LED dimmer switch to a two way lighting circuit that has six dimmable LED downlights. Both the two way switches worked perfectly fine before, so I exactly copied the wiring sequence from the old standard switch to the new dimmer switch = Com to com, L1 to L1 then L2 to L2. Since I added the dimmer switch, it works okay, but only if the other single standard switch is on. If that standard switch is off, then the dimmer doesn't respond. I tried the swapping L1 and L2 around but that just reversed the single standard switch to act like it's been flipped upside down.

What have I missed or done incorrectly?
