I bought one on Amazon which has come only today. They cost nearly about 100 euros and have these bands.

    LW 150khz to 280khz

    MW 530khz to 1710khz

    SW 1711khz to 30000khz

    FM 66mhz to 108mhz

    AIR 118mhz to 136mhz

Then SSB (LSB/USB) which is used to hear the amateur broadcasts around 7100khz shortwave. I don't know if it'll get the CB and Irish churches that use 27000khz (27mhz) to broadcast on with SW using AM and SSB as I forgot if CB radios use FM or AM wavelengths. I don't know how many Irish churches use the CB band these days as well.

I had a Yaesu FRG7 back in the early 1980s but it’s long since been decommissioned.

What’s the name of the the Amazon unit?

I got one of those cheap as cheap Chinese ‘one knob’ receivers recently but have only tried it on FM

CB here uses AM or SSB. FM for EU. You can get some German or Italian stations the odd evening on FM

It's XHDATA receiver. Tonight I've picked up a very good station on MW 1494 that is playing some good 1990s dance music which I've never got before. Has anybody got that before?

Possibly Coast FM from the Canaries. The transmitter is near Sligo.

I am not really up on shortwave, having never possessed any kind of radio with shortwave, although I am interested when I hear of pirates still on the go using that band. I was curious about the thread title. Is is essential that the shortwave radio receiver has to be expensive??

Look up something like an sdr dongle on amazon or wherever. Software can be a steep learning curve but it leaves a lot of radio spectrum available tonlisten to for small enough money.

I’m not the expert on it but the Chinese units seem to be quite good at a low price point. Other posters have mentioned SDR stuff which seems to be the way it’s all going these days.

The reviews I have heard of XHDATA were mostly negative, mostly having issues with buttons and switches at some point. However they seem sensitive on reception.

Sangean ATS909 etc.. isn't very sensitive in the AM field and neither FM. The filters are often to wide.

The old Sony and Grundig models until the 90ies were good ones often with narrow filters as well.
