Reclaiming foreshore

I was wondering have any of you tried reclaiming foreshore for agriculture? I was looking at some inlets in the west of Ireland that could be reclaimed. I thought gabion walls would be a good starting point and then reinforce them after.

State owns from low tide to hide tide positions on the foreshore unless another title has been issued; which is next to nonexistant.

You would need a foreshore licence to do anything else; but that won't be given for this. You aren't going to be able to do this.

Hmmm - most of these areas are strictly protected with various designations for the past 30 years. Indeed there are a number of areas previously reclaimed like Inch Island in Donegal that is fighting a loosing battle against rising sea levels

I know you can make a claim for adverse possession if you squat on foreshore for 30 years. How would they know?

Google maps and other satellite images, probably need proof of underwater accommodation or proof of you keeping your finger in the dam for 30 years, so to speak, it would be up to you to prove it, not vice versa.

I think you'll find it alot cheaper and easier to buy an existing farm nearby

I know in my area the sea has eroded a massive amount of some of the fields by the sea. The land registry maps show large areas of what is now beach as field. Who owns these areas now?

ROTFL Not if you live in Waterford. Approach the council with a report about anything and they tell you they can't deal with any issue thats reported unless its on the official form and signed. They official form wants so much information that most people won't bother.

Get a Councillor to report it. Every council requires those details

Reminds me of the time that there was a fella on here planning to roll a few fields in the spring. Trouble was that he had no roller and was going to use the tyres of his jeep to do the rolling…….

I was thinking of replying to advise him to grab a 21mm spanner and misalign the two back wheels before he started. He’d slash his rolling time in half if he was driving around like a crab 😂😂😂

A lot of land in Ireland is under high level tide. Most of our farm is. Similar to Holland, I guess. The OPW maintain the banks and sluice gates on it.

The "foreshore" goes out a little further than that even.

The foreshore of Ireland is classed as the land and seabed between the high water of ordinary or medium tides (shown HWM on Ordnance Survey maps) and the twelve-mile limit (12 nautical miles equals approximately 22.24 kilometers). Foreshore also covers tidal areas of rivers particularly estuaries.

The right job is if you're knocking ditches or digging out a site for a tank or a house is to tip the stuff along the shore to raise the level. Keep doing this or get neighbours to tip there too if they're doing any digging and you'll have it reclaimed in a few years.
