As per the title I sold a car a few months ago and aside from paying for a Cartell I'm trying to figure out if it has been taxed or not.

Anybody got an ideas on this?

This used to be possible by starting the process to sell a car (by entering the model and reg) on the adverts.ie mobile app. However I just checked it there and it says the tax on my car expired in 2023 when it actually doesn't expire until 2026. But it may be worth a try.

Because there's an ongoing dispute as to who is liable for a ticket they got.

I'm trying to find out when the car was transferred into their name and if they have its taxed would be good info to have also.

You can find out the date of transfer on the motor tax website, it will be the date you filled in and signed on the logbook the day you sold the car, which you then sent to Shannon.

You did do that didn't you?

Following on from the info you shared on your other thread.

Inform Shannon the car isn't yours, the date you sold it is the date that matters, not whether the new owner taxed it.

You mention having a photo of the log book? The metadata on that will confirm the date it was taken and s such, the date of sale.

Rookie mistake letting the buyer have the log book, always return it to Shannon yourself unless selling to a dealer.

A history check should show the date of ownership change?

Only if its been transferred in the last 3 months

    Thank you for the info.

Yes,indeed a rookie mistake that is now seriously coming back to bite me.Letters now are about initiating court procedures if fines arent paid.

I will follow your advice but the problem is the council who issued the fines are not interested in hearing about Shannon or when car was transferred. Its in their system now and they're not interested in anything else

Major mistake on my part but no I didn't. I left that to buyer who I trusted.

I actually can't believe that sentence reading it back.

I don't think I've been scammed or anything, it's just more of a clerical error that could have been avoided if I hadn't been so stupid.

Do you have the new owners details? Name & address etc?

If you have a pic of the logbook with date of sale and signatures I wouldn't worry too much.

Though maybe worth dropping into your local Garda Station with the letters and pic and informing them of the buyers name and contact details.

If selling a car privately, remember, YOU send the logbook off to Shannon.

Have bought a few over the years and have been just handed the logbook at transaction.

Anyone dodgy, is just going to take advantage of that. Besides something as trivial as tax. When you're the registered owner of a car, you've certain legal obligations.

The absolute pain of you sell to a toerag, never bothers (or deliberately doesn't bother) to send logbook off. Car ploughs a person down dead or is involved in a burglary. All that's on record is your reg and you.

I'm sure it can be rectified. But, the hassle of rectifying it isn't worth it.

OP maybe get on to Shannon with your records and sale date. They'll have nobody to transfer the logbook to. But at least there's a record for yourself, if ever needed.
