Energy arbitrage

    What am I missing:

Can one charge say 10 kwh battery in an hour on night rate, discharge it immediately over the next hour at export rate (higher than night rate), then repeat for a total of 4 cycles during the night?

The cost benefit needs to factor in payback period vs warrantied cycles no doubt, but is this type of use prohibited by energy companies?

Sure you can. As long as:

You're registered with an NC7 to get past the 5.5kW/25A limit with the NC6
You can import at a constant rate of 10kW
You have an inverter and battery setup capable of an average of 210A continuous
You account for the AC-DC conversion and thermal losses, in both directions!
You account for the charge-discharge lifetime of the battery

    Thanks for the counter.
I casually picked 10kwh but let’s drop the battery to a 5kwh to get over the first few points you raised.

Has anybody here tried this out for a period?

I must admit it seems unethical….will the energy company catch on to it I wonder…

Why stop there? Get 4 x 5kWh batteries and fill them up at the Energia EV (6.74c between 2-6am) rate and then discharge them at their 20c FIT rate.

Its not unethical at all..its called grid balancing..buying electricity when there is excess and selling it when there is demand. Dynamic pricing is coming to Ireland to allow you to do this, The CRU told the providers that they need to have this in place by March 2026 (I think?) but you MIGHT see it this year as they said they wont stop them implementing it earlier if they want.
