Hi, looking at an old Merc w123 in the Uk 1985 year . It has an upgraded Merc diesel engine making it more user friendly .

I know I pay €200 vrt , 23% vat on the purchase price but what is the revenues position re a non original engine ? Am I correct that they can lob another 10% onto the vat charge ? Just can’t get an answer anywhere

The discounted VAT / Duty on vintage cars is intended for ones in original condition - with items being replaced like for like if needed. A different engine is definitely an issue if they spot it, but if the V5 hasn't been updated I'd imagine you'll have no issue - the VAT is paid without the car being inspected. The VRT won't be an issue as its €200 regardless as you said.

If the V5 has the new engine number on it then you wont have any issues. The last time I brought a car (2022) in they wanted to see the matching numbers on the car and paperwork
