I haven't kept up to date with technology in a good few years.
My parents PC has managed to get infected with malware, fake pop ups everywhere asking for renewal of McAfee (which they don't have) and fake virus scan results.
They have windows defender which reports no issues and I have spyware blaster and spybot search and destroy installed and up dated (do this every few months anyway).
I have scanned with spybot and removed all items but issue persists.
Anyone recommend a free removal tool?

and you have checked that this is not just chrome or edge(just another jizz of chrome) that were given permission for some sites to "pop-up" the crap ?
Settings > Privacy and security > Site settings
