Back to butch beefy barbarians - this round's high score challenge is Capcom's classic, Black Tiger.

Another one of those 80s classics I've only played a handful of credits and have been meaning to sink more time into.

First played this in a little club beside the Summit in Howth, maybe 35 years ago (i am SO old)

One of my all time favourite, mindless games, and one of the very few I ever completed on 10p … when that was a thing

I rember one at the very begining in the wall behind you . That's all don't think I got past level 1 back in the day.

I tried to credit feed this game and got stuck on a dragon boss that was just impossible when you lost all your power ups and got "gradiused" back to your default pee shooters.

Got furthest I've been in this game .

Lost my last life as I came across a floating spinning coin with a skull on it ..I'm jumped to collect it and it killed me . Possibly the skull on it was a warning sign 😂

Oh nice, fair play! I thought I was doing well setting a new high score, apparently not haha.

It really is a lot of fun. Really liking the mild RPG elements.

Theres two dungeons on first two levels ..just full of goods and those bearded lads that give ya time and coins . Did ya get them . I presume there is one on every level . They aren't hidden , just off the beaten path . Well handy to get coins and beef up your weapon and ya can then make mince meat of enemies

I managed the dungeon on level 1 alright but died twice on level 2 with really badly timed jumps. Then got mangled by the first level boss on my second go and rage quit haha.

Will give it another whirl this evening. Definitely feels like a game that was good value for your 10p back in the day.

Yeah deffo..some of those jumps are hairy all right , I managed to loose 2 life's on them ..but trundled on with my last life for ages

Same! Literally fell down one hole, came back to life and fell down another.

Gave it another 3 creds last night . Would have beaten my score but made stupid mistake in stage one and lost a life .

Powering up weapon and armour seems to be the way to go in the shops

Is there a way to use anything you buy in shops or do they just automatically get added to your stats? (Kind of like Rastan?)

Theres what looks like an elixir in the shops but I was a bit unsure if you buy it and then use it when you want or if it automatically tops things up.

Hammering on random buttons doesn't seem to do anything 😁

Yeah there is an orange one in the shop. Bought it a few times but dont seem to do anything . Maybe it extends your life bar potential as at one stage I had four blocks of vitality but only one full . You also have a blue vial in your inventory and not a clue what that does either .

I read ws same ...hitting two buttons and three hoping for some magical dragon I could summon 😂

Got to same point . Spinning skull coin. I said " ohh no I won't try collect you I'll kill you" jumped to kill it with a few lashes and it hit me and I died .

Thinking now its made of stone and has cracks in it and if games have told me anything about cracked stone ,I need a stronger weapon

The board is black dragon rather than black tiger, but from a quick look its supposed to be more difficult.

"Black Dragon is the Japanese version of Black Tiger (or BT is the Western version of BD). It's exactly the same game with a few more falling rock traps and extra enemies and slightly more difficult bosses. Also, the hidden items have different graphics and the Zenny values are tweaked to make it harder to get the expensive items. Essentially it's a harder version of the same game"

Have it set to normal difficulty and 3 lives on dipswitch.

I think the key is to get the weapon upgrades first because they stay with you when you die. Armour is just used up.

I think if you have certain armour on a particular life, you can use the elixir in the shop to replenish it. But it's maxed out by your armour so no point getting it if you're on the basic one, if that makes sense. Will pay attention next time

The red arrows point in the quickest direction, the grey arrows are the long way round so more points

The potions that stop you getting "poisoned" when you walk into one of the flowers that emerge from the ground … when you are poisoned, the controls are reversed, so you often end up walking into trouble afterwards

You only need a few potions … you can pick them up, and you can pick up armour along the way too … spend your money on the best weapon you can. The daggers that fly when you hit have a real impact, so don't be afraid to peg the dragons from a distance, even if your main weapon doesn't hit them, the daggers can.

Also, the secret items … there are extra lives, max armour (+8 I think), coins, and points … my memory is there is at least one or two on each level, as well as countless keys (for the chests) and potions (for the flowers) … you might get vitality pots as well, I'll have to play it again tonight and see

but you don't pick up weapons, those you have to buy

Okay so that first score of 99750, I did it without two massive bonus point things.

Since I've discovered the bonus points, can't get any higher anyway!

Level 1, first dungeon, hit the wall immediately to your left when you go on, thats an extra 10k

on level two, near enough the end, you're climbing a last pole, the wall to the left of it has a thing that gives you 50k! You have the hot the wall about half way up the pole.

There's an extra life hidden in a wall on level 2, just beside and slightly above a chest.

And that's what I've learned hitting random walls all the way!

Got as far as level 4 and it's properly difficult, multiple boulders at once. Great.

New highest is 147,300

Can do a bit better I think!

Ahh didn't want to know where the bonuses were...and there are extra life's !!

Since you ballaxs know them all and are using them I'll have to utilize them in a pathetic attempt to rival these wild scores that are off the charts .

Honestly 558700!!!! I may just hang up my loin cloth and wash the oil of my muscles with that carry on .

And the high score record 1,594,400.

According to that site - there is a claimed high score of 1720950 … which is amazing to me

I have finished this game, collected most if not all of the bonus drops, and farmed all the 1cent zombies for the scorez … and never got past 700000 … I'd love to see what these guys can do to get over 1 million
