HI, we are just about to lose our rented property due to landlord sale. We are 2 community healthcare workers with 3 children in need of a 3 bed home to rent in portlaoise area. I hope someone can help us. Many thanks, Rob

So you have access to a car? If so, I'd consider:

    Mountrath/Abbeyleix
    Roscrea/Athy
    Monasterevin or even Kildare

Once you realise that the government (NGOs and Charities too) has no interest in helping or protecting you are on the right road. Start making your own plan that does not involve government assistance.

OP. There are just not enough properties in the private rental market. At least in Dublin/Cork where there is some institutional investment and build to rent etc. providing some supply (even if its at eyewatering rates). Outside of the main cities, there is very little supply at any price. You have to think of yourself in competition with all the other people who are in the same boat as yourself. What will make you beat your competition?

Consider widening your search area (a bigger area means more possible rentals to apply for) - Already mentioned

Work out why you are better than other prospective tenants. permanent jobs with established employers (get employer references - as glowing as possible), track record of being good tenants (get current landlord reference), money in the bank/savings, no pets, like gardening…. whatever will make you stand out.

Get alerts on daft so you are among the first to register interest when a new property goes up in your search area. Have an email ready to go with your main selling points and references attached etc.

Contact local agents and introduce yourself with your story and references etc. Local agents may well be the ones doing the selecting of tenants, so knowing them in advance can help.

Remember, for you to win, others have to lose.

I would say go even further. A plan has to be sustainable and give long term security. Land lords are being pushed out of the market. Go to Citizens advice but be prepared to jump two steps further than what you can see.

Buy yourself and your family some counterfeit ukranian passports on the darkweb. That might help source accommodation.
