Looking to Move from Digiweb 1GB Siro

    Hi Folks,

With Digiweb for years and it's been a great service. It's 1GB Siro and costs me €59.95. However it galls me that one friend four doors down has been paying €39.99 for the same service the last two years. Another friend two doors down just signed up on my recommendation and will be paying €37.95 for the same service.
I called them and the best I could get is €42.95 a month with a €15 credit for 12 months. This still works out more expensive than the two examples given.

I see Eir offering 5GB for €44.99 for a 24 month contract. This seems attractive but here's my issue. I have two Nest Wi-Fi security cameras that use 2.4Ghz. I had to install the second iteration of Google Nest Wi-Fi (2nd gen unit) as there was constant drop outs. With Eir offering a Wi-Fi 7 router I'd probably still need to have the mesh system in place.

In saying that though the Nest camera's are getting on and I really should replace them with something better (they are the 1080p version).

    Any advice?

Yes that’s not an issue, you can remove the eir router altogether. IPoE/DHCP will work, VLAN ID 10.

The mesh will still be a better set up instead of just one router, even if it is WiFi 7. There is the option of getting eir’s extra “booster” also to have a similar mesh setup. But I’d say you’ll want to keep using your Google setup.

Eir won’t use SIRO to connect you and as you have said it’s 5Gb being offered to you, that would be open eir that will be installed. This involves a new fibre cable being installed and another ONT installed on the wall.

    Many thanks for your reply.

I'm afraid I'm not quite as technical as I once was (thanks to having a kid and less free time). With regards to the ONT, would the engineer be willing to not install the Eir router and go straight into the mesh unit?
Secondly, is the Nest Wi-Fi unit limited in speed? As in, I seem to recall reading that older architecture was limited to speeds around 585Mbps. If that were the case, perhaps there's no point in changing to Eir.

There is a “bridge mode” on the eir router, there was when I was with them a few years ago anyway, but it’s straightforward enough to just remove it all together. Actually older models of Nest don’t support VLAN tagging so you might have to use the “bridge mode”.

The engineer wouldn’t connect your Google mesh, they would only connect the ONT to the ISP provided router. Then you can enable “bridge mode” yourself and connect your Nest mesh.

That speed would be the most you’d get on WiFi 5, which is likely what you have.

You could use eir’s provided WiFi 7 router and “extender/booster” instead for faster speeds in theory but some posts about the “extender” aren’t great.

It's a bit mad to do, but you can always just cancel Digiweb and once cancelled, resign up at 37.95 for 12 months. They were doing free installation when the address previously had SIRO installed and can do remove switch on. Alot of hoops to jump through really but if anything, you could always just refer 2 users to Digiweb to offset the difference in the 37.95 and the 42.95 they quoted you.

Other side of the coin, you could go with Eir but as NotShero mentioned above, you'd need a brand new (additional) FTTH line ran to the house and additional ONT. I've found Eir FTTH rock solid to be honest and their customer care if needed is actually miles better than was in years past. Vodafone SIRO is also fairly reasonibly priced but the Gigabox they provide is a crock of…. and it's vodafone….

Avoid Sky as there still seems to be issues where customers are getting assigned a UK IP address which causes problems with RTE Player, Google etc- just not worth the hassle.

Many thanks for the replies. I knew the engineer wouldn't be likely to connect the Mesh system, however I thought I'd ask as I've met some before who were willing to go above and beyond if you asked them nicely. Those days are probably gone.

Without any increase in speed, which I guessed was unlikely due to the older mesh system, there's not really any benefit in moving to Eir's 5GB (unless I'm missing something?).

Many thanks @Ah-Watch for the reply above. I could indeed cancel the contract and see what happens. I certainly never even considered, and wouldn't, going with Vodafone or Sky.
Another option to consider is moving to 2GB Siro with Digiweb for the same money as I'm paying now for the 1GB.

What about maybe Pure Telecom, I have seen a few people who switch between Digiweb and Pure Telecom when one won’t give them a similar new customer deal.
