Connecting flight at Stansted

Has anyone tried getting a ''connecting flight'' at Stansted airport lately? If you have, you'll know there is no such thing in the normal sense. I booked a flight to London Stansted with the intention of getting a connecting flight to Europe. I discovered you have to exit the arrivals and go through departures despite me not having any luggage. The whole process took about half an hour (not including the twenty minute flight delay) at which point I missed my connecting flight. Totally ridiculous.

Nobody will have sold you an actual connecting itinerary through Stansted. When doing self-connecting anywhere, you need to give vastly, vastly more time to do so.

You booked 2 separate flights and missed the second one, that's not stansteds fault.

If a 20 minute flight delay and 30 minutes going back through security prevented you joining the second flight, it's on you. An airline that sells multi leg flights probably wouldn't sell you a flight with such a short connection.

Did you even think to book fast track security at Stansted to give yourself a sporting chance?

No. I expected it to be the same terminal. I've never had to exit an airport to get a connecting flight. It seems to be the case here with all flights.

You didn't have a connecting flight, you had two independent flights, you made two standalone bookings.

You have to do the same thing in Dublin (with most airlines), in Birmingham, in Edinburgh, in Gatwick etc

I missed self connection about 6 weeks ago. Plane was late and passport control was backed up with next flight departing on time. I bought next flight to Dublin for 100 sterling.

Express passport check lane at Stansted is 15 sterling which is outrageous

Well I definitely learned my lesson. I think I'll get a train in future instead of a connecting flight. The trains in Europe don't seem that expensive compared to the UK. When you factor in the time, it is probably better to fly to your destination country and grab a train instead of risking a changeover at the airport.

Try changing through Bergamo if in Schengen. That is a good transit airport for those who self-connect
