Just back from picking up a nice W124 in Germany. Ad said it was registered in June 1995. Turns out it was July 31st, so not yet 30 year old.

Car was too good to turn down so I bought it.

What options do I have to make sure it's just €200 VRT?

A quick trip to the UK by ferry in August and get another ticket?

    Any other suggestions?

Car is ŵorth about €6k so need to avoid it if possible.

Export plate runs out in 2 weeks, but new insurance not an issue.

Just VRT it once it’s 30 years of age in a few weeks - there’ll be no penalty.

Bring it in and book your VRT appointment at the last possible moment and hope to get a date in August. Just have an appointment trail and you'll be okay

It's already in Ireland. Had no choice as I was in a rush with work! :-)

At the risk of repeating myself, and saving you money, leave it on your driveway, and just bring it in for VRT after the 30 years has passed. The maximum fine is €200 for late registration of a vintage car. They never charge it.

    OK, thanks for that.

I have a friend with the same problem - he bought a car that had finished production in 1992 but on the logbook it is registered 1996 . The car started out life in Yugoslavia and then with the separation of Yugoslavia , in 2024 it went to Germany from Serbia . On the TUV paperwork (NCT) in Germany is stated in four different sections that the car was manufactured in 1989 and the estimated first registration is also 1989 .The car was then registered in Croatia in late 2024 . So the question is would the Revenue register the car on a 1989 plate so as to qualify for vintage VRT of Euro 200 . He paid about six thousand Euro for it but has all the relevant paperwork for it as he had to get export plates in Croatia to drive it home through all the European countries .

I had similar with my CRX - first reg date was 1996, car was 1989. There was an note on the front of the V5 saying the cars first registration date was actually 1989 and revenue were fine with that.
