What's the deal with these, are you replacing your driver or your 3 wood?

I'm looking to get my driver shortened by an inch as I'm more consistent with it when I grip down a little. Would a mini driver give me the same performance/forgiveness? I'm not too concerned about distance, I'd like to be straight off the tee more often.

I think they're very expensive to justify but I've not tested one so there's that too. Personally I just can't see myself lumping €450+ for a club that's 10 yards past my 3w and a bit harder to hit from the deck. It doesn't solve a problem in my game or the course I play. 200-220yds with an 3i/4i is perfect when I need to hit short grass.

A slightly shorter driver shaft won't lose much distance. You'll only be a few mph down on clubhead speed. It should still be easily past a mini driver. Maybe you'll feel comfy with the shorter shaft and be super happy ripping it full blast with no loss in speed.

A mini driver tends to have higher loft. Either 11.5 or 13.5 degrees are the options. They're really just a branding exercise for a 2w or strong 3w with a larger head. I doubt I have many holes that would even be green light for mini off the deck.

I doubt many people drop their driver for a mini but Eddie Pepperell did it on tour many times fwiw. He's a bit of outlier in the way he sets up his bag tbf.

Perhaps a driver fitting focused on forgiveness may be a better shout. You could always stick in a 2i/3i instead of hybrid/5w for a another tee option. Lots of 2nd hand ones for reasonable money.

All my driver struggles come from lack of practice and then trying to rip it off a high tee. Bringing the tee down and lowering attack angle always helps me. Reduces the stress over the ball and takes out the big misses.

Thank you for the detailed response!

I have no intention of spending €400 plus on a new mini-driver but I'm sure some will pop up second hand.

It's going to be a lot cheaper to get someone to cut 1 inch from my existing driver and work away with that.

Like you mention, most of my issues off the tee are my own shortcomings. My alignment is woeful, I could start there!

The price of equipment generally is horrifying.
