Moving to Sky from Virgin

    I currently have Virgin broadband and TV. The signal comes in through a cable and not the phone line.

    There is fibre in my area but I don't think it is connected to my house as the old copper phone line is still physically connected to the house.

    If I switch do they have to come out and connect the fibre and do I get to say where? Current phone connector in hall while cable is in the living room.

    It would be SIRO or open eir that will be brought in. No other ISP will use the coax cable you currently have with Virgin. You can check which is available to you here -

    SIRO will be brought in near the ESB meter and open eir might follow where the phone line currently is. You can say where you would like it to terminate but they wouldn’t necessarily have to go by you.

    It would probably depend on how awkward it is for them to do and the engineer you get on the day. It will be the same engineers, e.g. KN Circet, no matter what ISP you pick as they are contracted by open eir or SIRO for installations.

    Thanks that sounds like what I thought needs to happen. It would be nice to have the old copper wire gone as it hangs low and goes into the house in a peculiar way.

    It could also be NBI or Virgin Media fibre too if it's available to the OP.

    It’s unlikely to be NBI as the OP has Virgin Media coax, NBI wouldn’t have included them in their rollout as it was above 30Mb/s.

    But yeah It could be Virgin FTTP

    I did this switch two years ago. Sky used the OpenEir fibre connection. It took three visits from KN Circet to get a guy who was willing and able to connect the fibre from the duct on the path outside to the duct outside my door. He then brought it in through the door frame and installed the connectors just inside the door.

    We were using Sky Stream, so the Stream box could connect over wifi, and didn't need a wired connection.

    I am pretty sure it is a fibre connection because they installed it on all the phone poles. Virgin also upgraded their network in the area.

    I tried 5 times to order sky but their website crashed each time.

    There isn’t one fibre connection, there are multiple access networks that use FTTP - open eir, SIRO, NBI, Virgin FTTP.

    So you would have to find out which Sky wants to use to connect you. If it is Virgin FTTP then the cable that’s brought in would likely follow the coax install and the coax would be removed. If you were to switch back to Virgin that’s what you would then use. You can also switch to Sky, Vodafone and soon Digiweb through Virgin FTTP. It mightn’t be Virgin FTTP though.

    So the network guy called down this morning and said that the point coming in had to be at the front of the house and it was not possible to put it in the same/similar location. This would of meant the hub and network box would use wifi to operate. We have always had issues with wifi signals in the house but have a cat5 network in the house. The garage is a big issue as it is reinforced concrete so no wifi signal works so I have a separate hub connected via the cat5 so I get a signal there and the same with one of the bedrooms. He told me wifi is just as fast cat5 which I disagreed with saying it will cause a bottleneck and will get interference

    I reluctantly agreed to the front room but because I was unhappy with it in the front room he said he wouldn't do it and left. A 2nd guy came down and said no problem he just needed another guy to give him a hand. Another guy came down 5 minutes later and they installed it where I wanted.

    Anyway there is my experience
