Annual TB testing

Just wondering is it possible to move the date of the herd TB testing from around now to later in the year say August or September?

There is a lot going on around the place at the moment with silage etc, and if the date was pushed back it would be one less thing to be worrying about/doing in the middle of everything else.

    Thanks

you can bring it forward without any problems pushing it out that long the department will restrict your herd first of all they don't like lads been disrespectful to the test anyways if any of your neighbours go down they will be on to you about a test if your gone 4 months without having one

I push mine out about 10 days every year. Can still sell calves but older stock tb date is out.

You can push it back. They won’t lock you up if you have a date organised with the vet.

Your Best bet would be to push it out a month then when it gets close push it out again. Have often done it here.

Sorry to jump in, got text from department "DAFM: Your herd will be restricted from midnight due to an infected TB herd near you. Restriction letter to follow"

My own test is in Aug, what will this mean for me

I'd guess that it means that if you are not in need of selling animals, you plan for your August date, but if you are under pressure to sell, you will need to arrange your test now.

Bear in mind that your nitrates loading for the period of being locked up will be removed from your overall loading at the end of the year. You may be able to work this to your advantage, and may change your mind whether you are under pressure to sell stock or not.

Ok thanks for that. Didn't know about the nitrates also.

When could I be open again? If I pass my test in Aug? Or does the other herd testing come in to it? I really hope I don't end up failing as I wouldn't be able to winter them

I'd say you might get "test by —- " in the letter, although August isn't far off. You will be clear if you pass but might be put on 6 month testing

Letter just landed, they will contact me if my herd is relevant and I may be required to go into contiguous 6 month testing until the breakdown herd has one clear test

Just passed test 🥳 4th test in 12 months. Prob another in 6 months, it would wear you out but what can u do

@minerleague that's just it, it's a massive pain in the hoop but there is nothing you can do.. you are not only responsible for your own farm but all the farms around yours and you are even responsible for cattle you sold in the Mart for months after you sell them...

There has to be better way.

As @tellmeabit shows about you can get a text message a 5 o clock any evening to say you are locked from midnight over what is happening on an adjoining farm.. that's very unfair.

I just didn't do my 4 monthly and left it till over 6 months.

I don't jump to the dept every time.

Having our 2nd test so far this year, contig to 2 people that are locked up. At least they're paying for it, you'd want to be doing a bit of dosing, vaccinating or weighing every time they get tested.

What compo will you get if you go down and have failed to test on time ?

We went through contiguous testing two years ago and it's a pain on both animals iykwim. I lay awake at night worrying if we we're going to pass the next test - the suckler cows got narky about entering the crush to the point that we had to put up extra gates to force them into it.

I'd take the chance before putting springing cows up a crush on the frosty days of February like dept intended.
