What We’ll Miss When The Older Jocks Go

Just something that occurred to me yesterday evening listening to Internet radio. On came a song by Billy Preston duetting with Syreeta. Once I heard the name Syreeta, Steve Wright popped into my mind. About 4 years ago off the cuff on his BBC afternoon show he played Harmour Love.

I couldn’t remember the song title but recognised it from going through her albums.

Listening to those older guys was a musical education as they cane from a time when they listened to the music first hand and could play what they liked at times.

Now the majority of presenters aren’t necessarily into music and are playlisted anyway. There’s no need to really have an interest in music. I honestly can’t see many of the current crop unearthing any kind of old gem if they’re still on air in 30’years time. Maybe I’m wrong.

There have been millions of new songs since Steve started out. It's hard to keep up. The old jocks would be experts on 1% or less of artists and their songs. For every old gem that survives, thousands sink without trace.

I’m very well aware of this. No DJ, no matter how good or enthusiastic, could be expected to be on top of every song released or on every album each year all the time. My point is that they got to play things they liked back in the day and could come up with something you’d never heard before. Let’s be honest, any of the 70s and 80s shows are largely picking from the same limited pool. Now most are influencers and social media types, there isn’t even a chance of them having any vend down the line.

More music released in a single day now, than in all of 1989. Not only do they get to play things they like these days, they get to produce and issue anything they like. And can bypass the whole music industry and radio station scene completely.
