I need to replace a double mattress and just had a quick look on Harvey Norman, they have ones ranging from €200 to over €2,000.

Before I looked, I had a figure of €500/€600 in mind. If I go into the shop and try out a few and find one I like for that price range or a bit higher, what am I loosing out on compared to a more expensive one? Last longer? What should I look out for? Best place to buy?

I remember seeing lots of ads (can't remember if on TV or YouTube) a while back for a mattress that came with a 100 day (or something) trail, the selling point was it's unique construction, had many layers and pockets I think it said, but can't find it now. Anyone know what I'm talking about, and are these worth consideration?

    Thanks!

The mattress with the trial option is likely EMMA - I found them too hard so returned during trial period, went with a Respa Rhapsody instead.

Try EzLiving. I found them good value, and brilliant to deal with.

@odyssey06 Yes, that's it! Was the Emma harder than you expected, I see they have different "feels"

Where did you get the Rhapsody, I checked a few of their stockists and that one is not listed.

I just checked that thread, thanks. There is 86 pages, is there any specific post I should look at?

I have an Emma mattress, hybrid premium I think. I like it and think it's good but I'd advise when buying it sleep elsewhere for approx a week until the fumes dissipate, I did not realise how bad they were until I got it.

Yeah, couldn't hack the Emma at all. I guess I go for medium, something with support but not too firm.

Castle Furniture in Bray, deliver nationwide, still seem to have Respa Rhapsodies listed.

This is the site for the Irish manufacturer, you could enquire about stockists

Seconded for EzLiving, were brilliant to deal with and love our mattress and bed frame. We spent (I think) €749 on the mattress and it was worth every cent.

Our old bed is now the spare bed in the house and the difference is night and day and I used to think the old mattress was good.

King Koil for us, expensive but my husband has a back condition so a good mattress is essential.

Before that we had a Sealy, also excellent but not as easy to get in Ireland.

Honestly I think a mattress is one of those things where there's no substitute for going to a shop and finding the one you like

You'll be spending about a third of your life on it so might as well be sure it's the one you want

In terms of what's the difference between a cheap and expensive mattress, the main factors seems to be the depth and makeup of the cushion layer and the number and quality of the springs

Long story short, more money gets you a thicker cushion top which may include things like memory foam. It also seems to get you more springs which are stronger

A lot of more expensive mattresses are orthopedic which basically just means its firmer in some areas than others to account for the fact that human backs aren't flat. So you sink in and are supported rather than feel like you're sleeping on a wooden pallet

Unfortunately it isn't one of those cases where more money automatically gets more comfort. I would definitely never go for the cheapest option but what works for other people might not be good for you

So, best bet is to go around a few shops and see what you like

I'd also drop another recommendation for EZ Living, the staff are good and in general I think their furniture is just a bit classier looking than others. Harvey Norman in particular always seems to be very flashy stuff, seems more for showing off than using

Yeah I was asking if you are living In Dublin because ideally you need to head to one of big retail parks where loads of different furniture stores and literally lie on all the beds.

My husband and myself are like professionals at it🤣. We will know within about 3 seconds of its right or not for us.

There is absolutely no comparison between the cheap mattress and more top quality ones. Im like the Princess and the Pea😄

We have been lucky to stay in some nice hotels but nothing compares to our own bed and mattress at home.
