Would you not have to give a Dublin address to register it to?

Yes youwill have to know someone .. if its a dealer they might have a dublin dealer contact who will do as a favour to ni dealer

I'm not 100% sure on this but if you bring the car to a Dublin NCT center for the VRT inspection and pay the charge there then you might get D plates

Might be worth calling the NCTS to check this out, they don't explicitly say what determines the county of registration

The address it's registered to determines the county of registration. Doesn't matter where the VRT inspection is done.

Can you use a “temporary “ Dublin address, a friend’s or a relative?
Years ago I bought an import from a main dealer and he advised putting it on D plates rather than my home county Limerick for resale.

Yeach, you could register it to a friend or family' members Dublin address and then do a change of address after the fact.

Can I ask why you would want to do this? If I was buying a second hand car I would avoid a D reg - would be wary of the condition of the drive train from being used regularly in heavy traffic.

Many used car buyers will offset any drivetrain issue against low mileage and driven on good roads and will go for a D reg.

This is even more prevalent with high end cars.

At the end of the day it's the market that decides.

Just change two bills to a Dublin address, you can print off an online copy now which will do

Aside from road conditions there are 1.5 million potential car buyers in Dublin who would prefer D reg just as cork people would prefer C reg

    Wouldn't be encouraged by authorities . Could u tippex out the ' L ' ?

No you cannot do this with private imports as you need to provide proof of address at the VRT appointment. So unless you have proof of address in Dublin you can’t get a D reg. If a dealer imports the car for you they can put the last line of the address as Dublin and you can change it online

Its easily done with a brand new car.

For what it's worth the VRT center don't do a deep dive into the address you provide, especially if they match on the proof of address and bank statements they ask for 😉

I would suggest not picking a part of Dublin where insurance is expensive.

Unless it's a prestige car not worth the hassle . Will it not show extra owner if u change back to donegal address ?

I don't see why not. If I was an insurance company doing my job then I would be interested in a car registered at a more expensive address than the one that I had given them.

Of course not, it's an address update, not a change of ownership. No different to moving house and changing the address to your new one.

Well you cant put you're own name down if u don't know anyone in Dublin

First time you tax it you can just update postal details... I've registered a car in a different county than where I live

I’m interested to read this, I live in Clare and usually buy from garages, 3 or 4 different ones, in Limerick and they always ask do I want Clare or Limerick plates on.

When new or import at dealer different if private import

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 9,254 ✭✭✭User1998

Thats because they can edit the last line of your address, and you can edit it again when taxing the car. Not possible for private imports
