Unfortunately, it's important to clear up, on official channels, that the perpetrator was not someone who fits the profile of someone who these self-proclaimed "patriots" like to target.

Otherwise, at best we get wild speculation and rumours from the usual suspects about them being "an unvetted" or some other buzzword they've been throwing around.

At worst, we get downright lies from those with an agenda to push racism and fear across social media and beyond.

The Gardai released that information because a bunch of racist freaks made it their mission to travel to Carlow to stir up trouble.

From what I've been told, there was a lot of tension in the area between locals and the rent-a-mob racists. No assaults or anything but a lot of verbals. It could have flipped at any minute.

Those racists couldn't help themselves trying to whip up a frenzy and they were put back in their box and into their cars back to where ever they live because the Gardai did that.

It's the fault of racist freaks that Gardai have to do this.

I've spent the past few hours reading the majority of tweets on Twitter.

The majority of Tweets are from the far-left claiming the far-right is spreading fake news that the perpetrator was a Muslim. But this isn't true at all. The most prominent "far-right" accounts havent mentioned anything about nationality or race.

There's a few accounts that seem to be based out of ireland claiming the perpetrator is Muslim. This Tweets came after it was confirmed the man was Irish.

Seems the majority of tweets of the far-left are more concerned about getting one over on the far-right and trying to link this incident with them. Without knowing the full circumstances of this tragedy.

Some far-left accounts claiming the man shot up to 7 people. This isn't true. What has been established is a girl was injured. Whether she was shot or the bullet ricochet and hit her hasn't been confirmed yet.

Yeah, those RW nut jobs just drove down to Carlow for the craic 🙄

You know well what they were trying to stir up.

Also it's long since been confirmed that the child was, thankfully, not shot.

    I'm partial to your abracadabra,

I'm raptured by the joy of it all.

can we assume going forward that the Gardai will be releasing the ethnicity, colour and gender of suspects?

Well done to the Gardai in bringing an end to it- I hope the 9 year old with “non life threatening” injuries (her leg was injured somehow) makes a full recovery

If it stops certain types of people spreading lies and therefore releasing this information stops potential rioting and looting then hopefully they continue with this tactic.

I kinda wish the gardai had let it play out and let the loons make idiots of themselves. They shouldn’t be releasing skin colour and ethnicity in this manner at all.

I hate that phrase ‘ not a terrorist incident’ as well. It basically means it wasnt a Muslim.

Did any of these “far left “ accounts travel to Carlow with their rent a mob?

Did any of them obstruct and abuse the emergency services dealing with the incident?

Did any of them abuse the locals?

Were any of them told by the locals that they weren’t welcome in their community?

Or was it only the dog kicker that behaved in such an irresponsible manner?

I've spent the past few hours reading the majority of tweets on Twitter.

Insert mythbusters 'well there's your problem' meme.

Twitter is a den of bots and trolls. You cannot take anything said on it seriously anymore; and the lefties were the first to leave, so I suspect many of the far left accounts you have been reading are sock puppets.

Regarding why the gardai released the info about the ethnicity of the perpetrator - as seen in relation to the Liverpool incident; 'the people who were complaining that the police announced that he was an English white man are the very reason the police had to announce he was an English white man'.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 829 ✭✭✭StormForce13

Both RTE and the GS (who released that info.) are damned if they do and damned if they don't, methinks.

I can understand why they thought it was a good idea but they have made things much worse for future events. If they don't do it for some future event then there will be assumptions about the perpetrator and accusations of cover ups.

They were extremely short sighted doing it in this case and it will come back to bite them. I think they simply mindlessly copied the statement in the UK after the Liverpool event.

but society is in a predicament because of some scummy people who want to cause trouble, riot and endanger here. Gardai release details quickly that an offender is not white and not Irish, it’s almost sure to create real trouble. The don’t release this, it will cause speculation and “possibly” trouble. Scenario 2 is better.

The journal.ie are reporting that the gun used at the scene was a legally held firearm.

I thought going back to the gun amnesty around 20 years ago that having unregistered guns was a five mandatory prison offense.

The man was out on bail for firearms offences. I very much doubt the Gardai left him with a licenced firearm.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,498 ✭✭✭Hippodrome Song Owl

Perhaps legally held by someone else close to him?

I shoot, in competition, and have legally-held firearms, ranging from shotguns, to extremely restricted pistols of .22 calibre.

The Journal is reporting that the firearms at the scene were legally-held, which I find to be completely incredulous. Apparently he had a H&K G3 rifle and a 1911 handgun. There is no possible way that these guns, particularly the G3, were licenced in this country, by a guy in his 20's. The 1911 handgun, maybe at a stretch, but definitely not the G3.

I'd be interested to see any additional information in this regard.

What I read is those guns you mention are the ones he was facing trial for holding illegally and importing illegally - seized by gardai investigating firearm trafficking. But the gun involved yesterday was legally held.

It does not state by whom it was legally held however.

I think we need to start taking things a bit more seriously in this country. We are not a serious people.

Read back about the original court case and the judge isn't taking it very seriously, making jokes etc.

I don't believe in locking people up but some people clearly shouldn't be out on bail. We've had two cases of that now in one week. To fix that though we'd probably need to build Thornton Hall and sure you could hardly expect Paddy to break ground on that in a mere 20 years.

I think it's right that in this incident and in future incidents that gardai and the media are as transparent regarding cause and motivation as feasibly possible, regardless of who is responsible.

Far right sources will only gain ground in an information vaccuum. People should have trust that the news is telling them the truth. Mainstream sources will always be on the backfoot in the digital age as they need to verify sources, but the only way to win the digital information war is if people ultimately trust what is being reported by mainstream sources.

yup, we re catastrophically failing to meet the needs of people with chronic and long term mental health issues and *******! its correct, we are not serious about such problems!

rip those involved, what an extremely stressful and ********* event for the people of carlow

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 58,818 ✭✭✭✭walshb

why is absolutely everything related to a tragic event a dig, or rant at “mental health” services here with you?

Can some people not just be scummy anymore?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 31,147 ✭✭✭✭Wanderer78

because this is what people who have such chronic mental health issues do, this is well documented all over the world now, so embrace it, this is where we are now going to also, so get ready!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 58,818 ✭✭✭✭walshb

ok, so it’s never the offenders’ fault. It’s us, society and our “mental health” services failures.. ?
