GDPR and previous owner details

I noticed over years that whenever I ask for service history details at the main dealer they would not print out detailed report and only give dates of service at best. Claiming that they cannot share owner details because of GDPR etc.

However they happily leave user manual in a glove box of a car on their forecourt with all receipts from previous owner with name, address, phone etc. Anyone viewing the car can look at this no problem. Then they sell a car and you have all these receipts in the glovebox!

Only one place cared to empty it before selling but I was still able to review all receipts in the car when test driving.

So advice to folks when you trading in take time and disguise your details or better don’t give them receipts if it is same garage if you don’t want your name and address be seen by potential buyers.

The difference is that the invoices and other service records that they would have are created by them and they are the data keepers for those records and have a responsibility under data protection to handle them correctly.

They are not responsible for what the owner leaves in the car.

Incorrect. They request hard copy receipts when you trade the car in so one should expect that these receipts are not dumped into the glove box for anyone to see.
