A mate of mine just got his IBT and despite my advice to get something a bit older to make his mistakes on he is insisting on getting a 241 bike that he's spotted.

With that in mind I'm wondering what he should be watching out for on this bike. The fact that its a 241 and has only 1000km done suggests to me that its been lying up for the better part of a year, so depending on where it was stored (inside/outside, under a cover or exposed to the elements and so on) there could be a few things that might cost him a bit of cash on. Its a private sale, so caveat emptor will apply here.

What should he be lookking out for? Tyres to make sure theres been rotation and no cracks, he'll probably need to get an oil change. Could fork seals perish over the course of a year, all that sort of thing.. And tips would be appreciated.

From my own perspective if the price is right, yeah he should go for it. Some people do get on bikes, buy everything new, then discover it;s not for them. It happens.

Look at obvious things such as tyres, oil definitely needs to be changed, chain doesn't have seized links, any rust forming if it was kept outside etc.

Personally I've been an advocate for buy older to learn on it first (as you said above) but there's a lot of overpriced dirt on donedeal to be honest, plus you never really know what you're buying. With this 241 there might be some manufacturer's warranty?

I'd generally be the same as Robert. Older bikes for newbies but they are going for silly money nowadays - with very little experience, if he drops it he might be pissed off but, dropping a new(er) bike might be more painful. What bike is it and what price?

Is that the NT-1100 your one ? how do you find it ? I ride a 2009 NT-700 and it's a pretty good bike, first time out in decent rain yesterday and I was bone dry, couldn't believe it.
