Google Meet - do I have to install it to kill it off?

For some time now my aged Android phone has wanted to install Google Meet. I know it's the successor to Hangouts, which I had successfully got rid of, never missed, and didn't want replaced by some other Google bloatware.

When it first appeared, I turned off automatic updates and have been doing them manually ever since for the apps that I use, but I'm getting fed up seeing those two words "Google Meet" on the list of updates.

Do I really have to install it, just to disable it? Is there no way to tell Google to feck off and let me decide what apps I want on my phone?
