Diesel Rattle Noise

Could anyone advise on this. I have a 1.5 Dci Qashqai. It's starting and driving fine but over the last few months there is a rattle/knocking noise when accelerating.

It is most noticeable when accelerating at low speeds or when going from 1st gear to second gear in low revs. It's also getting worse over time. Doesn't make the noise when the engine is idling.

I have had my mechanic look at it and he has said not to worry about it as the car is driving fine otherwise but the noise is very annoying, I'm struggling to get a definite answer to the cause of it.

Last year one fuel injector was replaced in case its related in anyway. A scan of the OBD reports a "Glow Pluh/Heater Circuit A - Malfunction" also.

Yeah, sounds very noisy alright. Those engines are normally quite loud and clacky on tickover, but that sounds like it gets worse under load.

You didn't say what mileage is on it, but the message about the glow plugs would have me checking and probably replacing them all. Also check that there's no leak around the replaced (or any other) injector.

Milage is high - 220,000 Kms. Would a Glow Plug problem case that noise though, the car starts no problem at all

Glow plugs are used during DPF regen and not just for starting the car. Worn plugs will still start it, but it can be a bit cold and clacky at first. If they haven't been replaced in that mileage, they have to be shot. 150k is normal.

And check those injectors. A loose one will be noisy under load. You'll see signs of leakage around it.

To me that sounds like a clattery DMF, It's probably on the way out, any vibration felt through the seat on the motorway?

no vibration felt through the seat but the gear stick has started very gently vibrating when driving to the point you can hear it when the radio is not on. Someone did say the DMF could the issue already when they heard it. What are you talking to get it replaced would you reckon?

Does the rattling stop or lessen when you press the clutch pedal all the way in?

Not sure on price to get it done but I service a family members 1.5dci in a Dacia Sandero and that seems fairly accessible to remove the gearbox so could be the same for your Qashqai. I'd give an estimate of around the €1000 for flywheel,clutch set and labour

Yeah noise goes away when clutch is fully in, but in saying that is goes when the car is idling too. its only when accelerating

My money is on DMF, does it happen when accelerating at idle while in neutral?

I'd concur with the flywheel idea - it sound very similar to a rattle I had on an Xtrail (2.0 Dci) and that was the flywheel.

I thought the 1.5 DCI wasnt prone to DMF issues though.

AFAIK, the lower power versions of the 1.5 has a SMF as standard although the version in a Qashqai would be a higher power version.

Qashqai is a subframe off job as are many of the Renault/Dacia line to do the clutch unfortunately
