Need advice on whether I should move from local authority to civil service

I currently work in a smaller local authority. I’m an acting grade V, but will revert to my Grade IV role in a year most likely. It’s hard to progress in my small local authority, it’s like if you don’t place in the top 10 on a panel you won’t get a promotion. Covid delaying promotions didn’t help either. I’ve been looking into the civil service, there’s an opening for an administrative officer and I might apply for it. It’s in Dublin, I’m a 50 minute train commute to city centre and I’ve heard the civil service is very good with blended working (2 days in office usually?). My current role is 2 days WFH, but I only live 5 minutes from the office. I want to progress in my career, but feel like there’s more opportunities for advancement in the civil service. Any advice from those who have been in similar situations?

I was in a similar situation and made the move to the Civil Service. I've been promoted since joining the CS to and EO and am currently 1 day in the office but in September it's moving to 2 days a week. The days will be set by my section so no choice on what day to go in. I'm based in a local town so the commute is grand 15 mins by car.

I had to attend Dublin for some training days and took the train and I'm not going to lie it was draining especially if you have family and commitments at home. A friend of mine also commutes to Dublin but said the days are very long due to traffic. I've had colleagues go for the HEO but have either not being shortlisted for interview or not passed the interview. I think you need to be really good at interviews in both Local Authorises and CS to progress so id probably look at getting some interview prep help if going for a promotion. In my Department promotions come up every 2 years with an internal comp and then the public jobs comp. I would say there's more opportunity for promotion but also there's more people going for the roles and less positions the higher you go! Best of luck with your decision!
