What kind of price should I be looking for our car

We're after replacing our car so its time to move on our old car. I'm thinking of selling it to my younger brother and would like to know what is a realistic price for the car so I can give him a decent deal. I thought insurance would be too high on it, but it seems not much more than more than regular starter cars so it might actually be an option for him.

• It's a 2011 Astra Estate with a 1.7 Engine (It's the H model, even if the year suggests it shouldn't be)
• Mileage: 190K Miles
• Owners: Should only be one Irish owner. We bought this car from a indie dealer 9 or 10 years ago, we are the first owners of it in Ireland.
• Service History: Essentially none. We have looked after it, serviced it every 10k miles etc and followed mechanics advice on whatever it needed, but I have no proof of this as the mechanic more of a cash centric operation. Probably have every NCT cert we got with the car if thats any use. Im not sure when the TB was done, but its probably written in the engine bay.
• NCT: Booked in for the NCT in two weeks time, so will have 13/14 months of NCT.
• Condition: Body: very Good condition, especially for its age. Interior: Good condition
• Features: Cruise control, thats about it! Stock radio, no bluetooth.
• Known Issues: Air con is useless in weather like this. Maybe it just needs to be re-gassed

Any suggestions on what it might go for?

Have a look on Done Deal. You can use the filters to narrow it down to just examples of your own car and can then find an average.

Youre talking minimum value car there, 1000 to 1500 euro. If it was for a brother I'd just give it to him rather than charge, even just to make sure you don't hear about it if its costing him money to maintain/repair shortly after him buying it.

For the general public, if selling it, 1500 euro would be doing well I guess?

190K miles or kilometres? I never understand why people list cars on Donedeal in miles, not kilometres. We drive in kilometres here. Or maybe it's a UK import?

They do it because the number is smaller and to try and confuse the buyer into thinking it's actually kms. Annoying and pointless, it just turns me off the car.

To be fair, if the car is over a certain age (or a UK import) the default will show in miles, not km. But still very annoying.

It does lead to the obvious question though - what is the correct metric term for mileage? Kilometreage?

Its worth about €1500 with a new NCT. About half that with no NCT

Donedeal seems to be full of dreamers at the moment. There is 21 2011 Vauxhall Astras on Done deal, 1 of them is E2k or less. I dont personally think its worth worth over E2k so I wanted to gauge what people actually think its worth rather than what people ask.

My initial thought on it was probably look for E2k and be happy with anything over E1.5k (EDIT: just to clarify, I mean selling it privately for this, not to my brother). The money I get from my brother would nearly be more symbolic than anything. It's more that he is buying it rather than it being handed to him. It's not like he's going to pick up much or anything for E1000 in the open market.

I'm not trying to make it look smaller, I'm just listing it in miles because thats whats on the speedo and all NCT certs etc. I guess I didn't specifically mention it was an import, but the dealer we bought it off imported it, that's why we are the first owners in Ireland.

People on DD always overstate the asking price to allow some bargaining room. Someone looking for 2k is probably happy to accept 1.5k.

Id test it and give it to him for €1k. I think that would be fair to both parties.

Whatever about dreamers on DD, cars are impossible to value when they are up in years. My Dad had a 09 Astra (hatch though) with a dent on every panel, an engine light on and 200k miles and advertised it 3 months ago for €2k !

He sold it in about 6 hours for €1700………..guy bought it as a starter car for his young lad.

UK imports can show kms but as you say it depends on age.2011 must have the option,especially if it is an import

Sorry, but why are people trying to tell the OP how much they should sell the car to their brother? They asked for a valuation, and they got one. Suggesting that they should just give the car away for free without knowing their financial situation is ridiculous. The car is worth about €1500 on the open market with a new NCT. Thats all they need to know.

Actually old cars are worth alot more due to shortage of cars on second hand markets with high taxes on imports from UK. Also with the preponderance of SUVs and crossovers on the road now there is a shortage of normal small and standard cars that young drivers need as starter cars
