What size outboard for going a little offshore.

I've got a little 12ft double skinned fibreglass rowboat which I'd like to take a mile or two offshore on the west coast.

I'd only consider it in very calm weather.

Can anyone tell me what size outboard I should look for? Not interested in speed, only to be able to get out and back safely. There's a plate on the boat for capacity but no mention of max hp.

I would look for a 10 - 15hp leaning more towards 15hp that should cover you for other people in the boat, tide, wind and currents. Better to have it and not need it than to need it and not have it 😉
