Eir Fibre - but not using the Fibre Box - issues

Hi all, it's been a while but great to see the Boards community still going.

I've always had a great experience here in the past so I'm back again seeking knowledge.

I'm in a house that has/had a copper phone line which was being used. Just got FTTH in with Eir and kept the existing phone number. The issue is that I don't want to use the Eir supplied Fibre Box as I have a Unify Dream Machine connected directly to the ONT using PPPoE to establish the connection and that's working like a champ.

I bought a Grandstream HT812 (v2) ATA which I had intended to use to connect to the existing phones throughout the house. I'm having problems with that but that's for another day.

So the question is, can I connect the FibreBox to my system via one of its LAN ports to get the phone sockets on it to work. Or does it need the WAN port connected ? If the latter, could I just connect the WAN port on the Fibre Box to my network ?

Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated as the phone line was used for a personal attack alarm device which is monitored. My MIL is worried about this even though there are 2 others living here now.

    Thanks

Afaik you need the SIP username/password details from eir to get it to work

The username is your landline number in +353 format @ voice.eir.ie (iirc) and the password eir live chat should be able to tell you

Based on previous discussion on boards they may not provide you with the password but no harm asking.

I can see the SIP credentials in the Phone settings on the Eir FibreBox, at least I think that's what they are. But does is have to be connected via the WAN port for it to work though the Eir router ? I'll give it a try later and see how I get on.

    Thanks

Ok so I can make calls with the FibreBox WAN port connected to my LAN but I can't get calls in, I don't get a ring tone so the call ends after about 10 seconds. Back to the drawing board I suppose. Anyone any experience with Grandstream ATAs ?

I don't have fibre yet so no ONT, ATA, etc., so my knowledge would be very limited.

My only experience of an ATA is my brother's connected to the Starlink router via a switch.

I recall similar setups to yours being discussed here on boards and the resolution was to place the eir router between the ONT and your own setup and simply use the eir router's ATA port to connect the home's internal phone network.

    Two options:

    1. Leave your own device in DHCP/IPoE mode and put the Eir modem into PPPoE mode, plugging its WAN port into a LAN port on your own device. The Eir modem effectively tunnels its own connection out of your network using PPPoE, with its own WAN IP.
    2. Put a 5-port switch connected into the ONT and then connect the WAN ports on both your device and the Eir modem into two of the other ports on the switch.

Eir won't give you the SIP credentials to use your own ATA, and what you see on the modem, and what anyone who you can get talking to on the phone will see on their screen, is a hash of the password and not the password itself so it won't work.
