    Road traffic act 2002:

    (3) (a) Where a person, whether on the same occasion or not—

    (i) makes 2 or more payments referred to in subsection (1) in respect of alleged penalty point offences committed on the same occasion, or

(ii) is convicted of 2 or more penalty point offences committed on the same occasion,

penalty points in respect of one only of the alleged offences or offences, determined, where appropriate, in accordance with subsection (4), shall be endorsed on the entry relating to the person.

Sweet Jesus. Again, ironically as quoted by prawnsambi this was changed in 2024. This is where I'm confused. Prawnsambo has said I am totally wrong, yet they quoted the same thing as I said!

The new law allows for 2 only, not 3. And it isn't commenced, so it's not law yet.

That's the wrong bit. The ignorance comes from not reading the thread where this has already been clearly stated multiple times including quoting the new law.

rough area… ok maybe you get stopped more in some areas but the odds of being caught driving under the influence only escalate when you smoke hash and drive.

I used to drive down a particular road every Friday night dropping off and collecting kids from a sports class. I was stopped frequently, sometimes twice in one night. On each journey. But no points as I never drink and drive or smoke hash and drive.

the regular checkpoint amused me. I’ve no idea why they were there. It was handy for a Garda station maybe.

Reading this page it looks like you’ll have to surrender Your license fairly soon

The citizens information web page on penalty points

    https://www.citizensinformation.ie/en/travel-and-recreation/motoring/driving-offences/penalty-points-for-driving-offences/

explains it well. You have up to 56 days from the date of the initial notice to accept the penalty points and pay the fixed fine.

You will get a further notice confirming that the penalty points will be added to your driving licence. The penalty points will be added to your licence 28 days after this notification.

So you could delay the application of the penalty points by around 84 days from the date of the initial notice (which might be a few days before you actually receive it).

This could push out a disqualification (if all 7 points were applied) to mid June. This is past your driving test date so shouldn't affect your driving test.

If you have received separate notices for the offences you might want to get advice on how you might minimise the addition of separate points from the one stop and if this is applicable in your circumstances.

The points allowed on a learner permit no different to the points allowed on a driving licence for the first two years. You might want to consider what happens if the points are applied to a learner permit and you do not pass your driving test, especially if your learner permit would expire during a potential disqualification.

You're on the edge of a disqualification before even being a qualified driver. Rules of the road are not optional. Follow them. If you don't get disqualified this time any points in the next few years an you almost certainy will.

Once the points are applied to your licence you will need to inform your insurer. If you think insurance is expensive for a learner or newly qualified driver it's probably just going to get even more expensive.

All 7 points will not be applied, do please keep up.

Also lucky that the car owner wasn't prosecuted for allowing their vehicle to be used by an unaccompanied learner.

They could own the car themselves, you don't need a full license to buy a car.

That's possible, but would then raise questions about how it was insured.

You can also get your own policy on a provisional license through most companies.

Policy will state that you will need a full license holder with you while driving but you can insure a car on a provisional very easily if you have the funds.

Likely the same way you did. You can own, tax & insure a car even as a learner.

however if insurance was an Issue OP then obviously it does not matter what points they apply you’ll be getting banned most likely.
