    Hi,

It is the first time here.

Can I drive it from the dealer without Road Tax (expired on March 2025) and no insurance till home (then, I will set it up properly)?

    Thanks

Road tax you'd get a pass for… No insurance, you won't.

Set it up before you buy the car. Simples.

    Insurance as above.

Can only do the motor tax when you get the logbook back. Have proof that you purchased the car if needed, but you should be fine. Don't park anywhere where a traffic warden could be as they can fine you until you get the tax sorted.

last car I bought. transfer insurance at garage, login online and buy tax. then drive away.

car was registered online in my name. could buy tax at that point

Motor tax be fine. Don’t drive it without insurance. Just ring your insurance from the garage before you leave, they’ll even let you use their landline. Think it took me 15 mins to do as couldn’t change it online via redclick.

Driving a car with no tax is ok so long as you can prove that you just bought it.

But you absolutely need insurance. The gardai will not give you a pass on that. Car will be seized.

Besides the legality of driving with no insurance there is the moral aspect too!

This is a new car to you, you will be nervous driving it. You dont want to even minorly ding your pride and joy before it is covered.

You should be able to get insurance cover easy enough. All you need is the car reg and model etc and you should be able to get quotes and pay over the phone or online…unless you are relatively young, have a bad record or the car is a boy racer modifiied Subaru Impreza!

Hint for the future - when buying a new car get quotes for that model to be sure that you wont be getting crazy quotes and can afford the premiums on your new car.

Do not drive with no insurance - ever!

Sorry, what's the transfer insurance at garage you meant?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2, Paid Member Posts: 6,240 ✭✭✭Buddy Bubs

Made a phone call to insurance when at the garage. I presume he drove the old car there, traded it in and transferred insurance then

the bottom line is if you drive away from garage without insurance and a guard spots you or in an accident your fucked. There is no leeway with the guards with regards insurance, the car will be seized by guards and you will have a court date. Guards now have camera systems built into their own cars and can detect cars without insurance.

Have your insurance sorted before you go to the garage or transfer your insurance while there by ringing your insurance company.

Guards now have camera systems built into their own cars and can detect cars without insurance.

how up to date is the info? e.g. in the instance given, will the updated information regarding the insurance be available to the gardai instantly?

Sorry for jumping on this thread OP.

I bought a car from a dealer on 2nd April. A month later the ownership docs have yet to come through despite the dealer saying he posted them weeks ago. How long does it normally take for the department to process? The tax expired yesterday and I'm unable to tax the car as a result.

Most dealers do the change of ownership online and you should have the ownership doc within 3-5 days.

Did you have a look on motortax.ie to see if the new documents had been issued?

Motortax.ie says transfer online can only be done with private sales. In any case this dealer told me a fortnight ago he posted the paperwork to DoT. There no update on motor tax.ie when I plug the cars registration number.

Legit dealers do the transfer of ownership online with Shannon rather than post it to them.

There is a good probability that the dealer didn't get or ask for the old logbook from the former owner so could not do the transfer of ownership. They might be hoping that you go sort it out yourself.

They bought the car from a legit main dealer so I would be surprised if the old logbook wasn't transferred to them.

stand in garage , ring insurance up tell them the new car reg, they transfer the insurance over to new car. I did check that they were open and what it would cost beforehand.

The dealers have access to another system for transfering ownership but it would show up on motortax.ie if the change was in the process of being done. Looks like it could be gone missing in the post.

It's very possible that the main dealer didn't get it from the previous owner. They may not have cared since the car was being sold on to the trade and it would be that dealer's problem.

If your confident the dealer you bought from transferred it over then ring Shannon to see if they are still processing it but given a month has passed I bet they didn't get any notification and the dealer is telling you they did as a fob off.

Why wait till the dealers. There is a lot going on at handover. Any car I buy, I ring the insurance the previous day and alter the policy for the new car insurance to start from whatever time I expect to leave the dealership. No issues.

Its updated every night. If he transfers his insurance at 9am and is stopped at 1pm the same day he will either appear to be uninsured or that the car is on the garage policy.

    Don't drive without insurance OP

Does it cover the car or the person? So let's say I and my mrs are both named on my policy. Mrs ELM is driving my car, and I am driving another car on my third party extension. How will they know I'm validly insured?

No you don't. Say you've arranged to do the handover at noon on Saturday. You ring your insurer the day before (or at any stage, really) and tell them you want to transfer your insurance from your current car to the new one at, say, 12.15 on Saturday. You drive to the dealership in your own car, fully insured. You do the handover. You drive home in your new car, fully insured, once it's gone 12.15. Seemples.

That's it in a nutshell spot on ….. why do some posters have to complicate things!!!!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 14,267 ✭✭✭✭prawnsambo

Lol. I knew some pointy pencil would be along with just this kind of scenario.

But say you turn up on the Saturday and your new car isn't ready because of some unforeseen problem. You're now driving home in your uninsured car and the insurance company is closed on a Saturday.

So I'd prefer to phone on the spot and make sure it's a weekday.

My understanding is it's the car. Its not a perfect system and there are obvious ways a car could be driven uninsured and not be picked up by the system. That is however making the perfect the enemy of the good.

Many policies these days have an instant online transfer.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 14,267 ✭✭✭✭prawnsambo

I imagine that would have to be like for like. I doubt for example you could transfer from a Fiesta to a Ferrari.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2, Paid Member Posts: 19,397 ✭✭✭✭ELM327

Fair, and I agree, once there's a way for a paper trail to prove insurance and not a case of "computer says no" I fully support initiatives like this. The less uninsured drivers on the road the better for all of us

I temporarily transferred my 1.0 Ateca policy to a Leaf for a few hours prior to picking the latter up and driving it home. The temporary transfer ended at the time of my choosing which was later that evening. Aviva didn't charge a fee and it was done through my online account. I arranged the temporary transfer only an hour or so before I went to collect the Leaf.

A permanent change was also an option.

    I'm going to suggest (don't @ me) that a Leaf isn't the same things as a Ferrari…
