Fencing options

I have recently inherited land which I will need to fence, regardless of whether I continue to lease the land as it was or start farming myself.
What would the best option be for a boundary fence. 3 strand Barbed wire or sheep wire and barbed wire on top.
I do not have any much experience of fencing but I will would have a go at it.

could it be a better option to get a fencing contractor. It would be about 200 m of fencing that really needs doing

get a fencing contractor to do it and it will be done right. You can’t beat the tension they get on it. And it’s tax deductible.

Get the sheep wire and thorn wire on it and you have a lot more options what you want to so it.
roughly about 6€-7 a metre.

Unless you've been fencing since a child, - get a contractor. I do my own, and with enough time I can do it to contractor standard but I rarely do owing to rushing.

3ft sheep wire plus heavy barbed on top is a 30 year fence if you buy proper stakes and strain it correctly. You'll make a balls of it yourself and waste the materials money unless you're experienced.

I would allow about 8 to 9 euro a Metre unless your fence line is straight and flat. There's places i fence that i have to use a pole every 1.5 m rather than every 3 m as recommended.

Buy the best poles you can afford. The wire is much of a muchness, - it all lasts long enough.

Did you use high tensile wire? what posts did you use was thinking of going with clipex posts and timber strainers

no it’s was the next one down from high tensile but still good strong wire. Timber posts from Kerry Co-op, €3:45 each, the majority were around 4 inch

That sounds very cheap. A middle of the road 5 foot x 4 or 5 inch diameter post is 6 or 7 euro. At 12 or 14m centres you're at €0.5/m. Add in strainers, wire and insulators then.

these were down as 3-5 inch posts, most were around the 4 inch mark, good strong posts. I priced a few different places, dearest I seen was €5:50 for “long life posts” with a 14 year guarantee, I actually bought those but got my money back after 3 weeks of false promises of delivery.

Standish sawmils? Had trouble with delivery with them years ago. What ever they like now.

if I beat everyone that made false promises with iron bars there would be a lot of cripples around here, especially plasterers and electricians. Maybe I should try to knock his house down with a digger or loading shovel, that seems to be the way of dealing with things in Kerry.

What is going to be grazing it. Use single strand of electric here. Ya you have to keep the hedges cut but cattle never get out.

Apply for the grant but it will be a couple o⁹f months before the next tranche closes, then you have to wait for approval and they are not going to approve all applications. Just finished a 5.5 km fencing project. Reference costs were 15k ish. Materials a around 10k+vat. We did most of the work ourselves. Not sure whether it's the 40 or 60% grant we get.

I have up buying posts out of the co-op unless really stuck 15+years ago. Using the Clipex posts now and depending on whether it's a grant job or not dictates the strainers

Would not buy them either. Uses to get great posts from a small operator near Rathkeale. He passed away about two years ago and the place is closed. He always had dry posts that were slow growing before treating and he did not spare the preservative.
