Another long shot on the horizon, I know with war raging in Ukraine now it's very hard to see beyond that. However when Ukraine joins EU which looks like it will be fast tracked, that's a huge agricultural country joining the block, surely in the long term that puts a dampener on any farming career ,especially a very small livestock farm. Everything looks rosy now in farming with the historically high prices for everything but paying to get out of a lease to go farming it yourself??

I knew a lad years ago that had only 11 or 12 acres that decided to go the pedigree cattle route and done exceptionally well with them.
likewise I know a few lads with no owned land that are going well lambing down half mountain type ewes and are making a good go of it as they are easily maintained.

I have a few sheep. Here and I am growing to hate them more every day.
There is money in everything if done right but I’d make sure you like and enjoy whatever your at and it’ll be half the battle.

Remember entitlements are capital expenditure. No tax allowances for purchase so at double value plus auctioneer fees it's 5 year payback before your money starts showing profit. With the next round of CAP on route their is a gamble involved also.

We are talking about 12 acres so about 5 entitlements. Purchase the lowest value ones as they are more likely to increase.

There is no BISS or CRISS payment without the entitlements. Only one entitlement is required to claim the CRISS on the 12 acres. 5 entitlements are needed to claim BISS on the full 12 acres, some other schemes like ECO, ACRES etc, require that the application be in receipt of a BISS payment.

If they wanted to play it safe they could just purchase 1 or 2 entitlements when they start farming and wait for the next round of CAP to see what happens.

Get rid of the sheep if that’s where you’re at. I had them for 5-6 years here and grew to hate them too. Which is another way of saying I couldn’t run the enterprise properly (no fencing or proper yard).

I sold them and never looked back.

Someone said to me later, “Anyone who got rid of them never missed them”

I had sheep for 20 year's and used to love them. . Got rid of them about 15 years ago and wouldn’t take sheep now if I got them for nothing.

my place is well fenced and I initially was using them to keep clear of ragweed as I’d been too fond of forefront and hadn’t any clover left. Also my children wanted a few which turned into pedigrees and they are particularly soft. I’ve came to a compromise this year with them that we cut back to ten crossbreed ewes .
