Hi there, we used to go up a few times a year but with work etc this hasnt been happening, we never expect to save a fortune anything but its more a day trip / day out - is there anywhere anyone would highly recommend for the likes of paint, pet food, cleaning supplies, toiletries, soft drinks etc and is there anyway to register for the likes of sainsbury or asda clubcards or any fool proof way of using tesco clubcard ? Thanks in advance, any guidance welcome

Pet stuff - look at Pets At Home - sign up to their loyalty scheme and you get 10% off 1st order (either click and collect) or in-store - you get a voucher in the APP to scan at the till - sign up shortly before you go.

Its effort but, generally, based on recent experience the best bet is to look at the store's websites and price up your larger purchases to see which (if any) is best - you can sign up for a Sainsbury Nectar Card. ASDA give cash back in the APP rather than discounts at purchase like Tesco.

For toiletries I find town Centre stores such as Savers or out of town, B&M to be better than supermarkets but, depends on where you are - no point in paying parking in a town Centre just to stock up on 50p paracetamol or Hayfever Tablets.

In my recent experience savings are ok if you are there anyway (very good in pet stuff) but, wouldn't justify the drive from Dublin just to shop.

Thanks so much, i'll try to sign up to the Sainsburys and Asda, I have registered for a tesco clubcard but as i dont have a uk number i only have the long card number so to speak - have you had any experience with Tesco of late ?

Depends where you're going from I suppose. My home is a long the border so I go up when I'm visiting home. Wouldn't travel from Dublin though.

All toiletries and medicines are much cheaper, I'd agree with the poster above, B&M or cheap chain pharmacies would be my go to.

With Tesco one thing for sure, if you don't have a UK Clubcard, don't bother going in - they inflate prices to reduce them to Clubcard offers. If you know anyone living in UK ask them to give you a scan of their Clubcard, otherwise someone on here may offer you a scan of a card to use - you can always ask someone ahead or behind you in the queue to put their Clubcard through for you as a last resort.

As with our own supermarkets they'll all be running promotions and, its down to what you want or a bit of luck whether you'll get any 'bargains' or, review their websites to target which you want to visit.

When I was up there recently I found prices were not great, particularly with the current exchange rates.

Also, suggest to use Revolut, it'll save you a little bit and all adds up.

Shop online and click&collect to save time. Check all the websites, including Lidl.

If shopping in Sainsbury's with Nectar card and you are spending about £300 or more, split the transactions in to first being £200 and next being £90 or more they will sometimes issue a £13.50 voucher off your next spend of £90 and this can be used straight away on the £90 transaction. Happened me twice in last 6 months. Works on alcohol purchases but not including those where 25% off is already applied.

I haven't been in Tesco Newry since last year, but have been told by others that they now take the Irish clubcard.
