Porting Handicap from abroad

    All -

Seeking the expertise of the forum here.

I have returned to Ireland after 10 years away. When I left Ireland, I had a handicap of 22, moved to the States and finished last season with a HC of 6.

Upon joining a club here in Ireland upon my return, for whatever reason, the new GUI number latched on to my old GUI account (likely mapped my DOB and name) and gave me a handicap of 22.

I've taken this up with my new club's handicap secretary who says to take it up with Golf Ireland, who in return said to take it up with the handicap secretary.

I've no intention of playing off 22, but the new club handicap secretary seems reluctant to bring me down to match the USGA hc from last season.

Has anyone had experience with this? Presume the handicap secretary just needs to get the finger out?

    Thanks!

Play in a competition for the craic and romp home by 16 points 😂 😂

They'll sort it out pretty sharpish after that!

Get a handicap certificate from your US club. Send it to your Handicap Committee with a cover letter. If they cannot do the adjustment, then they should go to GI. As far as I remember, the Clubhouse Golf software doesn't make it easy to reset a handicap in this situation and a workaround like putting in fake scores to generate the required HI may be required.

Please do. There’s a podcast in this story. “Breaking Bogey” or “Playing a Lie”. I’d listen.

We had a player return to Ireland having lived in Spain for 20 years. He got a print out of all the scores from Spain for the last 5 years and I manually entered them into the clubhouse app to get him his right handicap. A pain in the arse, but that's part of the job I signed up for.

    Its a universal handicap system...supposedly.

Should be no reason not to apply the US record I would have thought

Correct. If you're in an Irish or UK club there's a common database. So the unique membership number can be sorted.

For other countries talk to you local handicap secretary and get a copy of your handicap cert from the US club. Technically if you had the last 20 scores from the US plus slopes/tees info, then the handicap sec could manually enter that information in your GI profile.

Worth noting that just because you have a handicap eventually, you like will be restricted from winning competition prizes until you have enough Irish cards on your record. That's not a GI rule but something lots of clubs are applying locally.

Lots of US courses are private and don't have a slope rating so cannot be world recognised

I have a USGA handicap - just get the details from your GHIN (has slope, SS, ⇒ differential, etc..). I entered in a spreadsheet with course names and sent to club secretary in Ireland - he picked those that he could find and entered so I got a handicap within a few decimals of USGA.

It actually picks up your name and presents it with other people with the same name to the club official to pick which one is you. DOB isn't given, but previous clubs will be.

The only way to break that link, is for them to delete the new record they created for you, do the process again, but this time not link to your old record. You'd then have to submit three cards for handicap.
