Replacing screw in wall plug

I’m using some Fischer Duopower wall plugs (8x40) to hang a mirror. These can take screws between the sizes of 4.5 - 6mm. I put in the plugs, with some 5x50mm screws. Only to realise too late that the holes on the back of the mirror were a hair too small to go over the screws.

    My questions are:

    1. Can I remove a screw from a plug, and reuse it by putting in a new screw?
    2. Once I’ve already used a 5mm screw, can I replace that with a 4.5mm screw? Or can I only replace with a screw of the same size as the previous one, even if the plug can take the smaller screw?

If the answer to the above 2 are yes then it sounds like the solution is to replace with a screw that has a smaller head diameter. But I’d be keen to hear any other solutions people can think of.
