Children uprooting or snapping in half newly planted public trees

    Talking to them was futile.

From what I gather, this is an implicit(?) revenge for having said trees be planted in their play area - it's an open field of grass surrounded by terraced housing. Yet, there is another open field of plain grass more than three times as large just a road away. And an even larger park a few blocks away, and a separate football field. Tell me whether I am ignorant for asking this - is it that much of an inconvenience to not have an area to play at that is right next to your house?

Is there anything I can do about this? Having these trees be cleared is an understatement of how heartbreaking it is to me. I don't want it to be back being another boring plot of plain grass surrounded by gray pavement.

(also I really have no idea where I am supposed to post this - I doubt this fits a forestry forum? gardening seems to be only for private property. this seems too benign to be called vandalism and getting into legal action seems to be an overreaction + I don't even know who is directly responsible for it, I only know that it's one of or a few of the kids from a group.)
