Deferred Pension

My situation is unusual and that's probably why I got two totally different bits of advice from two departments .I am 66 years old and initially decided to stay working until I reached 70, and did not apply for my state pension .However my employer has relocated abroad and we have been made redundant .I finished work on the 31 March just gone .I am entitled to enhanced social welfare payment for 9 months . I wish to avail of this while I see if there is anything else out there for me employment wise or will do volunteer work if not. What I was told by Citizens Advice is that my Social Welfare payments will carry a free credit or what we call a stamp, and then at 67 I will qualify for the deferred State Pension enhancement .The Social Welfare officer processing my claim said no and that I need to see what 9 months without paying a stamp does to my future deferred State Pension claim.I was just wondering if somebody on here has been in the same position and how they might have handled .Oh my Accountant doesnt seem to know either .Thanks a lot for reading this.

It astounds me that Citizens information give out such incorrect information, especially when the information is on their own website. You will not get credited contributions if claiming Jobseekers Benefit after 66. The enhanced SW payment is for those between 65 & 66 as far as I'm aware.

I'm not such how a deferred Pension will be affected by claiming Jobseekers Benefit for 9 months but its clear ,no credited contributions will be given if you take Jobseekers Benefit after aged 66

Yeah Dempo is as always correct here OP there's genuinely no benefit to you holding off on claiming your State Pension for 9 months as no matter what payment you claim in the interim you won't get any credits from SW as you've turned 66. The options really are either to find temporary employment for the 9 months or simply claim SPC now tbh, anything else doesn't benefit you whatsoever

Do I not get the enhanced 450 euro brought in 21March .Surely age will not effect that .Thanks for the replies .Much appreciated .

I would say the below is what the Citizens Advise guy was talking about .

    Credits during unemployment

You get credits automatically if you are fully unemployed and getting Jobseeker's Benefit. You can continue to get credits if you have used up your entitlement to Jobseeker's Benefit and qualify for Jobseeker's Allowance.

Yeah. Those are the normal rules, but when you turn 66 that changes and you no longer get credited contributions

Apologies, I was referring to the payment those who had to give up work at 65 & had to wait till 66 to get the pension.

You would get the enhanced JSB if you meet certain criteria & one is deferring your pension till 70, which I honestly can't see any benefit in you doing so.

Details are on Citizens information but again keep in mind you won't get any credited Contributions if you sign up for JSB

Thanks a million for your help on this.I have 48 years stamps paid, so just was worried the months on Job Seekers might put my contributary Pension in danger due to non payment of stamps for the months waiting for my 67th birthday .Due to your help its becoming a bit clearer to me now.I know my situation is a bit unusual .Thanks again guys .
