Peter McEvoy, regarded as one of the best ever British amateurs, died today after a three-year battle with cancer. Below is a list of Irish courses that he designed or redesigned. It's quite the list. Fota Island was his first ever design project, which was designed alongside Christy O'Connor Jr.

    Powerscourt East

    Glen of the Downs

    Fota Island (with Christy)

    New Forest

    Seafield

    Rathsallagh (with Christy)

    Coollattin (2nd nine)

    Castlebar (new layout 2004)

    Mountrath (2nd nine)

Woodbrook (two new holes 2 years ago and current design changes underway)

    Beaverstown (remodelled)

    Edmondstown (remodelled)

I always enjoyed his courses, he had a great eye for the natural shaping of a course and nearly usually had a target in the distance to give you a line.

The 17th at Powerscourt East is one of my favourite holes and I often wonder did he create it knowing that the trees on the right running up to the lake were the perfect shelter from the wind coming down the mountain and across the green. The trees ended at the lake and the green was exposed to the elements, so any shot going for the green needed an extra club to carry the lake…. a very clever trap that caught many over the years.

Very nice guy by all accounts and a fine golfer in his day, may he rest in peace.
