    Strange I can hide my number in Viber and WhatsApp. Must look again at the sequence

    Just the Viber settings again.I went into calls and messages in settings.Then caller id and learn more.Scroll to near the end of the page and it says I must contact Viber to hide my number.A change in t&cs

    I don't answer private numbers, if everyone did the same then businesses/organisations would stop using them.

    I'm very unlikely to answer a call from a number I don't know. More than likely a scam call, which got way worse after the HSE hack. And I find the more you answer the more you get.

    I know I can hide my number, the issue I had was I didn't want to hide it but wanted it displayed so people knew it was me calling not some scammer from Hungary with a Hungarian mobile number. Even after a long back and forth with C/S it stayed the same so now I just message people to tell them I'm about to ring them. Viber did say that sometimes my number might show as being different but it was every time I found.

    The biggest culprits using hidden numbers are organisations (usually commercial) who wish to control the communication on their terms as much as they can.

    They have your number and can call at their convenience but would rather you didn't call them with a query. Might cost them to have to deal with incoming calls so make it awkward by hiding the number.

    Similar carry on with no-reply emails and texts.
